The Strength to Stay Beside a Friend
When my twelve-year-old son Leo came home from the school hike, he was exhausted.
His clothes were covered in mud, his shoes were worn, and he spoke very little about his day.
I assumed he was simply tired.
The next morning, the school called and asked me to come in.
Like many parents, my first thought was that something had gone wrong.
Instead, I found a small group of people gathered in the principal’s office, including several military veterans who had come to recognize something they believed deserved to be acknowledged.
Leo entered the room looking slightly uncomfortable by all the attention.
He had no idea why everyone was there.
