Canada Mourns After Deadly Shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia

By Staff Writers — Updated February 12, 2026

Canada is in mourning following a deadly shooting on February 10, 2026, in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The violence, which unfolded at a local secondary school and a nearby residence, left nine people dead and dozens injured, marking one of the most serious incidents of mass violence in recent Canadian history.

Tumbler Ridge, a town of approximately 2,700 residents in northeastern British Columbia, is known for its close-knit character and quiet surroundings. In a place where many residents know one another personally, the tragedy has reverberated deeply.

    A Community Changed in Moments

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), officers received reports of an active threat at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time. Emergency responders arrived within minutes.

Investigators later confirmed that the incident began at a private residence before moving to the school. Two people were found deceased at the residence. At the school, additional victims were identified inside the building, and others were transported to hospitals for treatment. In total, nine individuals—including the suspect—lost their lives, and at least 27 others were injured.

Some of the injured required advanced medical care outside the immediate region. Authorities have not released the names of the victims publicly, citing respect for families and ongoing notifications.

    Emergency Response and School Lockdown

RCMP officials stated that officers reached the school within minutes of receiving the emergency call. A lockdown was initiated immediately. Students and staff sheltered in place while police secured the building.

Video footage from outside the school showed emergency vehicles lining the streets and students being escorted to safety. Helicopters were deployed to assist with coordination and transport. Authorities later confirmed that there was no ongoing threat once the suspect was located.

Officials credited the swift response of first responders, school staff, and law enforcement with preventing further loss of life.

    The Suspect

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald identified the suspect as 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar of Tumbler Ridge. Police stated the suspect was found deceased inside the school from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted injury.

Authorities indicated that the suspect appeared to have acted alone. Law enforcement officials have emphasized that there is no further risk to the public.

Police also confirmed that the suspect had prior interactions with law enforcement related to mental health concerns. Officials are examining background factors, including how the firearms involved were obtained. Two weapons were recovered at the school.

As of this writing, investigators have not publicly released a motive and cautioned that determining one may take time.

    National Leaders Respond

Political leaders across Canada expressed condolences and solidarity with the victims and the Tumbler Ridge community.

Prime Minister Mark Carney stated he was “devastated” by the tragedy and offered support to the families affected. He also acknowledged the courage of first responders.

British Columbia Premier David Eby described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” and confirmed that provincial resources—including trauma counselling and mental health support—would be made available to the community.

Flags were lowered to half-mast in several locations across the country, and moments of silence were observed.

    A Rare but Devastating Event

Incidents of this scale are uncommon in Canada. However, when they occur, they leave a lasting national impact.

The tragedy has prompted renewed discussions around firearm regulations, mental health services, and violence prevention strategies. Canada has enacted significant gun reforms in recent years, including restrictions on certain types of firearms. Officials have not indicated whether new legislative proposals will follow this event, but conversations are ongoing.

Experts stress that prevention efforts must involve multiple approaches, including mental health access, early intervention systems, and responsible firearm oversight.

    Support for Students and Families

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves approximately 175 students in grades 7 through 12. In the days following the incident, counselling services were immediately made available to students, families, and staff.

Mental health professionals have been deployed to assist with grief support and trauma care. Community centres have opened their doors for gatherings, vigils, and collective remembrance.

Mayor Darryl Krakowka described the town as “a big family” and emphasized that residents are supporting one another through shared sorrow.

    Investigation Continues

The RCMP investigation remains active. Authorities are reviewing digital records, conducting interviews, and analyzing forensic evidence. Police have asked the public to avoid speculation while the inquiry continues.

Officials have confirmed that determining the full timeline and understanding all contributing factors will require careful, methodical work.

    Community Resilience

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Tumbler Ridge has shown visible signs of unity. Neighbours have provided meals, shelter, and comfort to those affected. Faith leaders, educators, and volunteers have stepped forward to offer support.

While grief remains heavy, community members have emphasized compassion, healing, and remembrance.

    Looking Forward

The February 10, 2026 shooting in Tumbler Ridge represents a painful chapter in Canadian history. For families who lost loved ones, recovery will take time. For survivors and first responders, support services remain critical.

As investigations continue and policymakers evaluate next steps, the immediate focus remains on honoring those lost and supporting a community navigating unimaginable loss.
