15-Year-Old Contestant Advances After Emotional Original Song on American Idol
It wouldn’t be American Idol without a few moments that hit straight to the heart — and the Season 24 premiere on Monday, Jan. 26, delivered one of its most emotional auditions yet.
Among the standout performances was that of Khloe Grace, a 15-year-old high school student from Jacksonville, Florida, who advanced after performing an original song titled “Forever 13.”
The Story Behind “Forever 13”
Khloe wrote the song several years ago, long before stepping into the audition room. The meaning behind it was revealed when Heather Wyatt appeared before the judges to introduce her.
Heather explained that the song was written in honor of her daughter, Aubreigh Wyatt, who died by suicide in 2023 at the age of 13.
“I first heard Khloe’s song about a year ago, and I immediately cried,” Heather told the judges. “It was beautiful — it was what Aubreigh had gone through.”
The judges were visibly moved. Lionel Richie responded, “I am so sorry for your loss. That is just unimaginable.”
Speaking later with Ryan Seacrest, Khloe shared that she never met Aubreigh, but felt compelled to write the song anyway.
“Something kept telling me to write that song,” she said. “So I did.”
A Powerful First Meeting
When Khloe entered the audition room, she and Heather met for the first time and embraced. “This means the world to me,” Khloe told her.
Addressing the judges, Khloe explained that she related deeply to what Aubreigh had experienced.
“I went through some of the things she went through,” she said. “It was really hard. I just thought, if I can write something that could help someone, then it’s totally worth it.”
Before the performance began, Carrie Underwood reminded her of music’s impact: “Music is very powerful. It lets people know they’re not alone.”
The Performance
With her guitar in hand, Khloe delivered a quiet, heartbreaking performance that left the room silent. Lyrics like:
“She was only 13, had some big dreams, and you took ’em all away…”
and
“Even though she is gone, her story will forever live on…”
clearly resonated with everyone present.
Judges’ Reactions
Lionel Richie said simply, “I’m just so moved,” before turning to Heather and adding, “That’s a gift right there. That’s God looking back at you.”
Carrie Underwood, fighting back tears, praised Khloe’s maturity and compassion.
“The way you had your heart broken for someone you didn’t even know — and turned that into something that could help others — that’s pretty incredible,” she said.
Luke Bryan was the first to vote “yes,” sending Khloe to Hollywood Week, with the rest of the judges quickly agreeing.
Beyond the Audition
Khloe’s performance of “Forever 13” previously went viral on TikTok after she posted it on Sept. 4, 2024 — one year after Aubreigh’s passing.
To honor her daughter’s legacy, Heather Wyatt founded The Aubreigh Wyatt Foundation, which focuses on awareness, prevention, and advocacy. She also authored a 2025 book titled The Aubreigh Wyatt Story: A Mother’s Fight for Justice, Love, and Lasting Change.
