Country Music’s Sweetest Love Story Was Quietly Written Behind The Scenes For Years

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodJanuary 3, 20263 Mins Read

When Little Big Town burst onto the country scene in the early 2000s, they didn’t just make music — they reshaped the genre. With Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman on vocals, alongside Jimi Westbrook and Philip Sweet on guitar, the group’s signature four-part harmonies set them apart and quickly became their calling card.

But beyond their musical success, Little Big Town has also weathered life’s storms together. Over the years, the bandmates have stood by one another through personal heartbreaks, career challenges, and life’s happiest moments. They often describe the group as “one big marriage” — a phrase that holds literal meaning for two of its members, Karen Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook.

On May 31, 2006, Karen and Jimi exchanged vows in an intimate Nashville ceremony. What many fans don’t realize is that the couple kept their marriage a secret for several months. Now, years later, their story stands as one of country music’s most enduring and heartfelt love stories.

Finding Love Where They Least Expected It

In 2002, Karen Fairchild went through a divorce just as Little Big Town was preparing to release its debut album. At the time, she had no idea that her future husband was already by her side. As both she and Jimi found themselves single, their close friendship gradually deepened into something more.

“I think Jimi and I had a special friendship and connection that blossomed when we were both single,” Karen once shared. When the timing finally felt right, the longtime collaborators chose not to let the opportunity pass them by.

Four years later, they quietly tied the knot. The newlyweds decided to keep the news private for two months, worried that going public too soon might disrupt the dynamic of the band. In the end, the leap of faith paid off — and they’ve remained happily married ever since.

Their family grew on March 5, 2010, when they welcomed their son, Elijah Dylan Westbrook. His name was inspired by one of their favorite Bible stories and their shared affection for Gunsmoke’s iconic character, Matt Dillon.

A Marriage That Stands the Test of Time

Karen has been candid about the challenges of marrying a bandmate. “We’re together 24 hours a day, so that can be a very good thing and a very bad thing,” she once admitted. “If you need space, there’s nowhere to go.” Still, she’s quick to add that the positives far outweigh the difficulties.

When they’re not recording or touring, Karen and Jimi focus on family life with their son at their Nashville home — a place with its own country music legacy. The house was once owned by Tammy Wynette, which inspired the couple to affectionately nickname it “TammyWood.”

Through years of touring, recording, parenting, and partnership, Karen Fairchild and Jimi Westbrook have proven that love can thrive both onstage and off. Their marriage — rooted in friendship, faith, and mutual respect — remains a true country music love story, and a testament to what can happen when two people grow together in harmony.
