Kelly Clarkson & Ariana Grande Deliver a Show-Stopping Live Version of “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me” in NBC’s 2021 Christmas Special

The only thing better than hearing Kelly Clarkson and Ariana Grande’s modern holiday duet “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me” is witnessing the two powerhouse vocalists perform it live — and that’s exactly what viewers got during NBC’s 2021 special When Christmas Comes Around.

Originally featured on Clarkson’s second holiday album of the same name, the song is an upbeat, contemporary Christmas track packed with vocal fireworks. But during this televised performance, Clarkson and Grande somehow managed to elevate it even further, delivering harmonies and high notes that felt effortless, joyful, and downright electric.

    A Harmony Masterclass

Fans of big vocals were treated to something rare: two singers at the top of their craft weaving in and out of harmonies with precision and playfulness. Every verse carried moments of quick, perfect blend, while the soaring chorus showcased both artists’ clarity, power, and control.

But the standout moment came during the bridge. Clarkson and Grande traded increasingly complex vocal lines before launching into whistle-like high notes that stunned even them. As soon as the final chord hit, the two friends immediately embraced, visibly thrilled by what they had just pulled off.

Their chemistry wasn’t surprising. Earlier that year, Clarkson and Grande had appeared together on The Voice, and fans still talk about their “Mixtape Medley” performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon — an unforgettable segment that ended with a Whitney Houston-style high note that left Fallon speechless.

    Holiday Programming on NBC

With Christmas fast approaching, NBC is rolling out a lineup of beloved holiday films throughout December:

    Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer — Thursday, December 11 at 8 p.m.

Shrek the Halls — Wednesday, December 17 at 8 p.m.

    It’s a Wonderful Life — Wednesday, December 24 at 8 p.m.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas — Thursday, December 25 at 8:30 p.m.

NBC will also air an encore presentation of one of 2025’s most celebrated TV specials:

    Wicked: One Wonderful Night

Hosted by Wicked: For Good stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
Airs Tuesday, December 31 at 8 p.m. ET

A Duet That Keeps Getting Better

As the holidays return each year, so does the tradition of revisiting favorite Christmas performances — and Clarkson and Grande’s rendition of “Santa, Can’t You Hear Me” has firmly earned its place among them. Their blend of powerhouse vocals, playful camaraderie, and undeniable star power makes the performance as thrilling today as it was when it first aired nearly four years ago.
