The Carol Burnett Show delivered another comedy masterclass with a sketch that doubles as a tongue-in-cheek guide on how not to sneak into the house after having too much to drink. The scene, from Season 3, Episode 21, features legends Harvey Korman and Tim Conway at their absolute best.

The skit begins with Harvey slipping quietly into the house, checking to make sure everything is safe. He motions for Tim to follow, assuring him that his wife is fast asleep. Tim tiptoes inside — only to immediately panic and announce he has “lost his tongue.”

Trying to regain control, Harvey warns Tim not to step on anything red and reminds him, “You can’t let your wife know you’ve been drinking.” Tim, completely oblivious, asks, “How is she gonna know I’ve been drinking? What’s the indication I’ve been drinking?” — right before collapsing dramatically at Harvey’s feet.

Harvey kneels beside him, urging him to get some rest before he leaves, but Tim slaps him on the back with exaggerated force and says, “Gotcha!” Moments later, he faceplants again, and Harvey scrambles to catch him.

When the cuckoo clock goes off, Tim grabs it and hurls it into the fish tank, explaining, “My bird died.” Harvey, trying to salvage the situation, starts a pot of hot water on the stove for coffee and heads out the door.

Left alone, Tim hears the kettle whistle. In slow-motion panic, he stumbles to the stove, tries to muffle the sound, then stuffs the scalding pot under his jacket — immediately burning himself. He then wobbles over to the refrigerator and shoves the entire kettle inside, whispering “shhh” as if soothing a child.

Hungry and disoriented, he attempts to make a sandwich by taking every piece of bread out of the fridge and slathering mayonnaise directly onto his hand. When his hands get messy, he wanders to the fish tank and washes them right inside.

He finds an envelope, attempts to open it by biting it, throwing it, shaking it — anything but opening it properly. Eventually, he gives up, dances around a bit, stuffs his sandwich into the envelope, and decides to head upstairs.

Just as he reaches the top, Carol (playing his wife) yells at him — and Tim instantly tumbles down the entire staircase into the basement, ending the sketch with peak Conway physical comedy.

Classic, chaotic, and brilliantly timed… everything we love about The Carol Burnett Show.
