Chris Stapleton Visits Teen Survivor of Tragic Crash

Country star Chris Stapleton recently made a surprise hospital visit to 19-year-old Alex Moffett of Erie, Colorado, who survived a devastating car accident while on the way to attend his concert with her family in June.

The Montana State University student had been traveling with her father Derek, 55, her younger sister Catherine, 16, and her grandmother Patricia, 83, when their vehicle was struck by another car. The driver, a 16-year-old who reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, survived. Tragically, Derek and Patricia were pronounced dead at the scene, and Catherine later succumbed to her injuries.

    Alex’s Recovery Journey

Alex was airlifted to Research Medical Center in Kansas City with critical injuries, including a punctured lung and multiple fractures to her pelvis, ribs, arm, wrist, and face. Since then, she has undergone several surgeries, including facial reconstruction, elbow replacement, and wrist repair.

Doctors learned that the Moffett family trip was planned around attending Stapleton’s All-American Road Show concert in Kansas City. One of her surgeons reached out to the singer, who decided to visit Alex in person.

    A Father’s Day Surprise

Alex initially thought she would be speaking with Stapleton over FaceTime. Instead, just minutes later, she received an unexpected knock on her hospital room door—Stapleton and his wife Morgane walked in to meet her.

The visit happened on Father’s Day, making the moment even more meaningful. During the encounter, Stapleton performed “Traveller,” a song he wrote after the death of his own father.

    Remembering Her Family

Speaking to FOX 4 Kansas City, Alex opened up about the grief she carries after losing her father, sister, and grandmother:

“Every time I look at a picture of my sister, my heart just stops for a minute. My dad was my best friend ever. He was the best person.”

On the teenage driver who caused the crash, Alex expressed conflicted emotions:

“Obviously he didn’t mean to kill three people, but he took my entire family from me. Part of me wants his life to be over and the other part of me wants him to just be able to go on and live a really good life and make something of it and make a difference in the world.”

    A Healing Moment Through Music

Though nothing can erase the heartbreak, Stapleton’s visit provided comfort during Alex’s long recovery. His decision to show up in person, share time with her, and sing a deeply personal song underscored the healing power of kindness—and music—after unimaginable loss.
