How It All Started
The events began with a normal COVID-19 scare. Paloma Nicole’s mother told her father, Carlos Arellano, that they would go to the mountains of Durango to get away from it all. She warned him that there might not be a signal. Carlos believed her story, not knowing that it was just the start of a nightmare.
“My daughter’s mom told me they were going to the mountains for about four days.” Carlos said, “She told me not to worry if I couldn’t reach them.” At the time, everything seemed normal. But a few days later, he got a call that would change everything.
Going to the hospital and getting worse
Carlos found out on September 15 that his daughter was in serious condition at Clínica Santa María. Paloma Nicole was in an induced coma and had a breathing tube in her mouth when he got there. She had had a heart and lung attack that severely damaged her brain.
The doctors tried to make her stable. They saw signs of improvement by September 19: she could move her hand and turn her head. That night, though, her condition got worse. Brain swelling got “very serious, terminal,” and on September 20, she was declared brain dead.
Father Talks About Unauthorized Surgery
Carlos publicly said that his daughter had had cosmetic surgery without his permission. He wrote on social media:
“Paloma Nicole needs justice!” At a clinic on Fénix Street, my 14-year-old daughter was the victim of criminal negligence. Dr. V. M. M. R. G., son of Magistrate V.M.R. L., did cosmetic surgery on her without my permission on September 12. Her mother helped him.
He also said that the death certificate wrongly said that “illness” was the cause of death, which made it look like someone was trying to hide the truth. Finding surgical scars during the wake confirmed suspicions that the procedures were done without permission.
An investigation is going on
The Durango State Prosecutor’s Office said that the minor was admitted with breathing problems, but they started an investigation after the father complained.
An official statement said, “The father asked for a necropsy because he confirmed that the teenager had cosmetic surgery without his permission.” The pathology results, which will take 10 to 20 days, will give us the final answers. The doctor in question is said to be the teenager’s stepfather, which makes things more complicated for both the family and the law.

Hundreds of people went to Paloma Nicole’s funeral at the Cathedral of Durango on September 22. Carlos was seen on social media holding onto his daughter’s coffin and asking for justice.
