Kenny Chesney & Mac McAnally Honor Jimmy Buffett With Emotional CMA Tribute

The 2023 CMA Awards turned into a night of remembrance when Kenny Chesney and Mac McAnally took the stage to honor the late Jimmy Buffett with a moving rendition of his timeless classic, “A Pirate Looks at Forty.”

Originally written in 1974, the song embodies Buffett’s trademark mix of nostalgia, freedom, and the restless spirit of a life lived on one’s own terms. It has long stood as an anthem for wanderers and dreamers — and on this night, it became a farewell gift.

    A Tribute From Friends

Chesney, one of Buffett’s closest friends and collaborators, delivered the lead vocals with heartfelt sincerity, perfectly channeling the song’s reflective tone. Beside him, legendary musician Mac McAnally — a longtime member of Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band — added delicate guitar work and harmonies, giving the moment a sense of authenticity only he could bring.

    A Stage Set for Memory

The performance was framed by soft, sunset-like lighting and images of Buffett projected across screens, creating the feel of a tropical farewell. The atmosphere was both intimate and powerful, as fans and fellow artists wiped away tears, lifted their voices, and celebrated a man whose music brought freedom and joy to millions.

    More Than a Performance

Chesney and McAnally’s duet wasn’t simply a musical number — it was a celebration of Buffett’s enduring legacy. Their heartfelt take on “A Pirate Looks at Forty” honored not only his artistry but also the stories, spirit, and influence he left behind.

For all who watched, it was a reminder that though Buffett may be gone, his music — and the lifestyle it inspired — will sail on forever.
