Bruce Springsteen Stuns Fans with Surprise Stone Pony Set at Sea.Hear.Now Afterparty

ASBURY PARK — The Boss is back. On Saturday, Sept. 14, Bruce Springsteen shocked fans with an unannounced performance at the legendary Stone Pony following the Sea.Hear.Now festival’s first night.

Springsteen took the stage with the Tangiers Blues Band, featuring festival co-founder and famed photographer Danny Clinch, alongside Robert Randolph and Jake Clemons. For about 30 minutes, he ripped through R&B rock staples like “Lucille,” “Down The Road Apiece,” and “Boom Boom,” with the Ocean Avenue Stompers bringing horn-powered fire.

“I was stunned,” said Stan Goldstein, co-author of Rock & Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore. “He had a show in Baltimore Friday, and he’s got another here Sunday. He’s 74 and looked like it was 40 years ago. He had that same smile he used to flash on the Pony stage.”

    Back Where It All Began

Before his set, Springsteen recorded a tribute video for the club’s 50th anniversary, which was shared on the Pony’s social channels.
“Here I am back where it all started — how does that happen?” he said. “Happy 50th anniversary Stone Pony. You made it! It’s a miracle you’re still here, but I’m glad you are. Love to everybody!”

Though he’s played the Pony countless times over the decades, recent appearances have been rare. His last onstage cameo inside was at an Alejandro Escovedo show in 2010. In 2019, he joined Garry Tallent and Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes outside on the Summer Stage.

“Who would have thought 50 years later you’re still getting Bruce Springsteen on stage at the Stone Pony,” Goldstein marveled.

    A Festival Packed with Legends

Springsteen headlines with the E Street Band on the Surf Stage at North Beach Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, singer-songwriter Noah Kahan headlined the festival, then joined the afterparty at the Pony, joking from the stage:
“I’m headlining the same festival as Bruce Springsteen — this is crazy! I’m trying to dress like him. This is a lot of denim to take in at once. Take your time getting used to it. Your eyes will adjust eventually.”

Kahan sported denim pants and a jacket covered in bright, colorful patches.

The weekend lineup also features The Gaslight Anthem, Trey Anastasio Band, The Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, The Revivalists, Kool & The Gang, The Hives, and more across three stages between North Beach and Bradley Park.

For Clinch, a Toms River native who has photographed several Springsteen album covers, the surprise set was yet another unforgettable chapter in the Boss’s storied relationship with the Pony.
