Kenny Chesney Brings Stadium Energy to Intimate Venues on Opening Night of the I Go Back Tour

Kenny Chesney launched his much-anticipated I Go Back Tour on March 23 at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, and from the first note, it was clear: this wasn’t just another tour stop—it was a homecoming.

Presented by Blue Chair Bay Rum, the trek finds Chesney returning to smaller arenas and cities that helped build his career, giving No Shoes Nation a rare chance to see their hero up close.

A Journey Through Three Decades of Hits

For two straight hours, Chesney powered through nearly 30 songs spanning his career, from early classics like “How Forever Feels” and “The Good Stuff” to fan favorites “Big Star” and “Don’t Happen Twice.” He promised surprises, and he delivered—mixing in deep cuts, heartfelt moments, and plenty of sing-alongs.

“Charlottesville, Virginia, this is the opening night, the first night of the I Go Back Tour!” Chesney shouted to the sold-out crowd. “Thank you for the welcome, thank you for the love.”

Stadium Energy in a College Arena

Chesney wasted no time setting the tone with “Til It’s Gone” and “Beer in Mexico,” before leading fans in a flag-waving singalong to “We Do.” The Virginia crowd roared during “Get Along,” with its fitting opening line—“Virginia is for lovers.”

One of the night’s biggest moments came when Chesney launched into the tour’s namesake track, “I Go Back.” Later, the arena lit up with cell phone lights and harmonies during “The Good Stuff,” a moment so powerful even Chesney admitted: “I guess we should play that one more often!”

    A Special Guest: Kelsea Ballerini

After delivering her own 50-minute opening set, Kelsea Ballerini returned to the stage for two duets: “Wild Child” and their sentimental chart-topper “Half of My Hometown.” The pair’s easy chemistry and shared Tennessee roots made their performances a highlight of the night.

    Flawless Vocals, Timeless Presence

Though Chesney told fans early on that he was “losing his voice,” his vocals remained as smooth and powerful as ever. Backed by his tight band and nonstop energy, he proved why he’s an eight-time Entertainer of the Year, constantly working the stage but never losing vocal control.

“I wanted to bring all the power and passion we have at the stadium shows,” he said afterward. “Charlottesville made the opening night feel like the biggest stadiums.”

    Encore and Lasting Impact

Chesney closed with “How Forever Feels,” before returning for an encore of “Anything But Mine” and “Don’t Happen Twice.” By the end, fans left hoarse from singing—exactly how Chesney intended.

With its mix of nostalgia, intimacy, and big-show energy, the I Go Back Tour is shaping up to be a must-see of the year. Smaller venues may house it, but Chesney’s spirit and sound are as massive as ever.
