Nicole Kidman Tearfully Honored With AFI Life Achievement Award: “A Blessing Beyond My Dreams”
Nicole Kidman was moved to tears Saturday night as she was celebrated by peers, family, and fans at the AFI Life Achievement Award gala in Los Angeles—becoming the first Australian ever to receive the prestigious honor.
A Night of Elegance and Emotion
The 56-year-old Oscar-winning actress looked radiant in a sparkling gold Balenciaga gown with a five-foot train, standing tall and graceful as Meryl Streep—a past recipient herself—presented her with the award. Kidman’s husband, Keith Urban, stood by her side, delivering a deeply personal and emotional tribute that left not a dry eye in the room.
Meryl Streep: “It’s Not Bravery, It’s Love”
Praising her The Hours co-star, Streep captured the heart of the room with a powerful observation:
“People call it bravery when an actress bares all and leaps into the unknown. But I don’t think it’s bravery. I think it’s love. I think she just loves it.”
As Streep spoke, Kidman wiped away tears.
Keith Urban: “She Chose Love”
Urban’s speech was a raw and heartfelt tribute to their 18-year marriage. Recalling the early days of their relationship, he revealed:
“Four months into our marriage, I’m in rehab for three months. Nic pushed through every negative voice, I’m sure even some of her own, and she chose love.”
Kidman, seated beside their daughters Sunday Rose (15) and Faith Margaret (13), visibly wept.
“She showed me what love in action looks like,” Urban said.
On Instagram, he wrote:
“In a career that’s still very much in full flight, tonight the AFI will honor my wife. Babygirl – I’m so proud of you.”
Gratitude and Legacy
Accepting the award, Kidman paid tribute to the many directors and creatives who shaped her path:
“It is a privilege to make films. And glorious to have made films and television with these storytellers who allowed me to run wild and be free… Thank you for making me better at my craft and giving me a place—however temporary—in this world.”
She thanked legendary filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick, Jane Campion, Baz Luhrmann, Sofia Coppola, and more.
Reflecting on her journey, she wrote:
“I grew up as a Sydney suburban girl who just wanted to act… To have forged a career by doing what I love is a blessing beyond my dreams.”
She also shared a photo from one of her earliest roles in Bush Christmas (1983), captioning:
“This 14-year-old girl could have never predicted all the talented people she would get to work with.”
Surrounded by Friends and Family
The gala was filled with famous friends, co-stars, and supporters, including Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Watts, Joey King, and Morgan Freeman. Kidman posed proudly with her Hollywood Walk of Fame star and celebrated with her sister Antonia, her daughters, and extended family.
A Career of Courage, Complexity, and Craft
From Moulin Rouge! to The Hours, Big Little Lies to Eyes Wide Shut, Nicole Kidman has consistently chosen roles that push boundaries and explore the human spirit. Her AFI honor places her among cinema’s greatest—Orson Welles, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, and more.
And yet, in her own words, this moment left her speechless.
“Receiving this award fills me with overwhelming gratitude. To be the first Australian to be honored in this way leaves me speechless.”
