Toby Keith’s Unforgettable Country Covers in Mexico: A Heartfelt Tribute to Legends
Back in early 2020, while spending time in Mexico, Toby Keith delivered a series of acoustic performances that now carry deeper meaning. Among them was a touching tribute to country star Johnny Rodriguez, a gesture that resonates even more profoundly today following the passing of both artists.
Stranded in Mexico during the early days of the pandemic, Keith spent his time revisiting classic country tunes. Whenever one struck a chord with him, he picked up a guitar—purchased from a local furniture store, since he hadn’t brought his own—and shared intimate performances with fans online.
His impromptu covers included gems like “Flowers on the Wall” and “Evangelina.” The former served as a nod to Harold Reid of The Statler Brothers, who passed away in April 2020.
A Tribute to Johnny Rodriguez and Billy Joe Shaver
Shortly after, Keith honored not just one, but two country greats with a stripped-down performance of “I Couldn’t Be Me Without You.” The track, written by outlaw legend Billy Joe Shaver and recorded by Johnny Rodriguez in 1976, became a top 3 hit on the U.S. country charts.
Introducing the song with his signature humor and respect, Keith said:
“Billy Joe Shaver wrote a little song and Johnny Rodriguez sang the p— out of it.”
With only his secondhand guitar in hand, Keith delivered a powerful and heartfelt rendition, honoring both the songwriter and the singer who had inspired him for decades.
Sadly, both men he paid tribute to in that video are now gone. Billy Joe Shaver passed in October 2020. Toby Keith died on February 5, 2024, at age 62. Just over a year later, Johnny Rodriguez passed on May 9, 2025.
Following Rodriguez’s death, Keith’s team reflected on how much the artist had meant to Toby. They shared two joyful photos of the pair onstage together and wrote:
“Toby always said that Johnny Rodriguez was a big influence on his singing. He saw Johnny in concert many times, and even booked him to perform at his 60th birthday celebration. RIP Johnny.”
What started as a simple, spontaneous act of love for country music has become a moving memorial. Toby Keith’s acoustic tributes from Mexico now stand as lasting reminders of the respect he held for the legends who shaped him—and the deep, soulful connection that ties generations of country artists together.
