The first time Craig performed the song at the Grand Ole Opry, the whole audience fell silent and then burst into tears, including Ricky Skaggs – who came to hug him and said: “You must sing again, because THE WORLD NEEDS TO HEAR this.” And the most touching moment was when Blake Shelton – Craig’s “close friend” – suddenly walked to the center of the stage, holding Craig’s hand in silence. A scene that made the country people EXPLODE.

American Idol Celebrates Easter with Powerful Gospel Special, Featuring Breanna Nix and More

On Sunday, April 20th, American Idol aired a special three-hour Easter episode titled “Songs of Faith,” packed with gospel performances in honor of the holiday. Confirmed earlier by People, the show featured powerful faith-filled moments from the Top 20 contestants, all three judges, and a lineup of inspiring guest artists including CeCe Winans, Roman Collins, Jelly Roll, Brandon Lake, and The Brown Four.

    A Night Tailor-Made for Faith-Filled Voices
This season already boasts several contestants who have consistently chosen gospel and worship music—making this special episode feel like a natural fit. A clip of the contestants spontaneously singing a worship song during Hollywood Week had previously gone viral on TikTok, further showcasing the spiritual heart of this season.

Two standout voices in the gospel lane are Canaan James Hill and Breanna Nix, both of whom have brought moving faith-based performances to the Idol stage. Breanna, in particular, has made a strong impression—not just with her vocals, but with her story.

Breanna Nix Brings the House Down with “Up to the Mountain”
Breanna Nix, a stay-at-home mom, first captured hearts during her audition of “Jesus Take the Wheel”—while none other than judge Carrie Underwood held her baby son. Since then, she’s consistently impressed with performances of songs like “The Trouble With Love Is”, “Still Rolling Stones”, and “Gratitude.”

For the Easter episode, Breanna chose “Up to the Mountain” by Patty Griffin—a powerful song inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic final speech. The song holds deep meaning and a notable American Idol connection: Kelly Clarkson famously performed it during a charity episode in 2007.

Breanna’s performance was emotionally rich and vocally flawless, shifting from soft, intimate moments to soaring notes with ease. Judge Luke Bryan called it “effortless” and praised the “purity” in her voice. Lionel Richie told her she didn’t miss a single note. And Carrie Underwood, clearly touched, complimented Breanna’s consistent strength, calling her “solid”—a rare and important quality in the music industry.

    Moving Forward in the Competition
To top off an already incredible night, Breanna was voted into the Top 20! With her momentum building and her fanbase growing, the next question is whether she’ll claim one of the coveted spots in the Top 14.

Watch Breanna’s stirring performance below—it’s a standout moment in what was a truly faith-filled evening on American Idol.
