Dolly Parton Brings Easter Comfort in 2020 with Soulful “He’s Alive” Performance

In a time when the world felt distant and uncertain, Dolly Parton offered a much-needed ray of hope with a powerful performance of He’s Alive on Easter Sunday in 2020.

With the COVID-19 pandemic keeping people apart that year, Easter celebrations looked vastly different. Church pews were empty, family brunches were canceled, and Easter egg hunts were postponed. But through social media, people found creative ways to stay connected and lift each other’s spirits—and Dolly was right there with them.

Filming from her home studio, Parton shared a moving acoustic rendition of He’s Alive, the stirring Don Francisco song she first recorded for her 1989 White Limozeen album. Though she usually performs it backed by a choir, this time it was just Dolly, her guitar, and a message that rang even louder in its simplicity.

Before singing, she acknowledged the traditions everyone missed that Easter—the pretty dresses, the church services, the gatherings. But she reminded her audience of something deeper:

“We don’t have to go to a building, to a church, to worship God. The kingdom of heaven is within.”

The stripped-down version of the song allowed her heartfelt vocals to shine. As she neared the end, her voice swelled with emotion, and she concluded by lifting her hands and quietly saying, “Thank you, Jesus.”

Her message of faith and resilience struck a chord. The performance quickly went viral, and since then, more than 13 million people have watched the video online, many finding comfort and strength in her words and voice.

You can still watch that unforgettable Easter moment—Dolly’s sincere performance of He’s Alive—and be reminded of the hope that remains, even in the quietest places.
