Kim Kardashian has once again sparked outrage after stating that many people had no idea who Marilyn Monroe was until she donned the Hollywood icon’s attire to the 2022 Met Gala.

The reality star’s words have caused controversy online, with many labeling her stance as false and self-centered.

During an interview reminiscing on her now-famous Met Gala appearance, Kardashian stated that wearing Monroe’s iconic gown exposed the legendary actress to a new generation.

“I think a lot of people didn’t even know who she was,” she remarked, noting Monroe’s cultural significance prior to the event.

“That was the most shocking thing to me and that’s why I was so happy to at least have that opportunity and that Ripley’s gave me the opportunity to share this moment so that it could live on.”

She went on to remark that she understands the value of the clothing. “I respect her and understand how much this dress means to American history,” she told The Express US.

The outfit in question is the dazzling, form-fitting gown Monroe memorably wore in 1962 when singing Happy Birthday to President John F. Kennedy.

It is still one of the most famous pieces of fashion history, making Kardashian’s statement even more unexpected to critics.

Kardashian’s remark drew significant criticism, with many claiming that Monroe was already one of history’s most famous women before the reality star donned her gown. Users on social media mocked the idea, with others highlighting Monroe’s lasting presence in film, pop culture, and fashion.

“Marilyn Monroe was, is, and will be a global icon. “Kim Kardashian wearing her dress did not change that,” one Twitter user wrote. Others emphasized Monroe’s influence on Hollywood, feminism, and celebrity culture, labeling Kardashian’s remarks disrespectful of the star’s legacy.

Historians also joined in, pointing out that Monroe’s influence lasted decades and extended far beyond her design choices.

“Monroe’s films, personal struggles, and contributions to Hollywood have been studied for years,” according to a professor. “She was a household name long before Kim Kardashian was even born.”

The 2022 Met Gala was already controversial owing to Kardashian’s plan to wear Monroe’s historic gown. The gown, designed by Jean Louis, was produced specifically for Monroe and had never been worn by anybody else. Critics claimed that the garment was a fragile piece of fashion history that should never have been altered or worn again.

Adding to the argument, rumors emerged stating that the dress had been damaged after the occasion, with lost crystals and evidence of wear. While Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, which owns the outfit, denied any long-term damage, the scandal increased criticism of Kardashian’s role.

Regardless of Kardashian’s belief in her power, Monroe’s position in history is certain. The Hollywood star is a timeless symbol of beauty, brilliance, and cultural significance.

While Kardashian’s Met Gala moment made headlines, it’s evident that Marilyn Monroe’s legacy didn’t need an introduction.
