My trip to Los Angeles was supposed to be a routine trip, but it ended up being a journey that completely altered the course of my life. Right as I was getting comfortable in my seat, a flight attendant by the name of Bethany saw the birthmark that was on my wrist. She then abruptly asked for my passport. After some time had passed, she informed me that the pilot wanted to speak with me after landing, which left me quite perplexed.

I was approached by a tall man with graying hair who I recognized from old photographs. He approached me as the plane touched down. This individual was Steve, a boyhood acquaintance of my mother. “Courtney, I am your father,” he said with tears streaming down his face as he revealed this information. Not only was I stunned and perplexed, but I immediately called my mother and demanded answers. It was her admission that she had concealed the truth in order to save Steve’s aspiration of becoming a pilot. “I believed that it was the appropriate thing to do,” she admitted candidly.

Although I was experiencing a tornado of emotions, I still had an important appointment with investors in Los Angeles. Steve, who was familiar with them on a personal level, made a few calls in a hurry to make sure that I would not miss out on the opportunity. After the meeting, I was able to obtain not just the deal but also a promotion that I had been waiting for for a very long time.

After one week had passed, Steve paid a visit to my mother and I, which resulted in an emotional reunion. She shed tears, laughed, and experienced a sense of completeness that had been absent for such a significant amount of time. On that day, I finally had a clear understanding of what it was like to have a family that was whole.
