Unexpectedly, President Joe Biden announced that he will not run for reelection in 2024. Following a difficult debate performance, Democrats voiced worries about his age and eligibility for a second term, which led to this decision. In a statement made public on Sunday, Biden said he will “step down” and concentrate on carrying out his presidential responsibilities for the balance of his term.
What was expected to be a fierce rematch between Biden and former President Donald Trump has been derailed by Biden’s decision. Even though both candidates won the nominations of their respective parties, Democrats became less confident in Biden’s potential to defeat Trump as a result of his dismal debate performance.
The 81-year-old Biden reassured the audience of his qualifications and resolve to stay in the race, acknowledging the concerns about his age. On the other hand, Trump’s lead over Biden increased in post-debate polling, a sign of the debate’s detrimental effects on his campaign.
In a later statement, Biden emphasized the necessity of party unity in order to defeat Trump and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Now that Biden has withdrawn from the contest, Harris is being considered as a possible contender.
The Republican Party has presented a unified front at their National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while the Democratic Party is dealing with internal issues and cries for a new candidate. Trump made a point of uniting the nation and standing up for all Americans during his speech.
This is a work in progress; more information will be released soon.
