Betrayed before moving into her dream apartment, Taylor was devastated. Her parents secretly borrowed in her name, leaving her in debt. Realizing where the money went left her with a tough choice.

Taylor told a life-changing story. I never considered such betrayal. But here I am.

Three years of studies led me to the prettiest apartment near college. My ideal home has large windows, a reading nook, and coziness. I was excited to tell my family.

I wanted to sit with them in our living room one sunny afternoon.

    “Mom, Dad, guess what?”

They looked up from their books at me intently.

I discovered the ideal flat! Ideally near university! I have privacy.”

Dad placed his folded newspaper on the table. “Taylor, we need to talk about this,” he said honestly.

Mom nodded anxiously. We advise against leaving. A waste of money. Stay home and save.”

Watching them sapped my energy. “What? Why? This is my longtime dream. What’s wrong?”

Great sigh from dad. Taylor, wrong time. You can trust us.”

When I was irritated and bewildered, I turned to Jake, my boyfriend, who had supported me throughout this apartment search. He watched from the door.

“Back me up, Jake,” I begged.

Jake stepped forward calmly. “Mr. and Mrs. Davis, with all due respect, I think Taylor deserves to have her own space.”

Parents were underwhelmed. “Jake, it’s not that simple,” Mom curiously remarked. “There are things you don’t understand.”

“Like what?” I demanded. “What aren’t you telling me?”

Their eyes showed hesitancy. Finally, Dad spoke. “We… we’ve loaned money from the bank in your name.”

I comprehend him by blinking. Father, what do you mean? How can?”

Mom cried. Talia’s wedding required funds. It concerned her.”

My jaw fell. “You funded Talia’s wedding? Ex-boyfriend Carter cheated on me with her? You kidding?”

Nodding denoted guilt. Dad said softly, “We didn’t want to burden you with this. “But we had no other choice.”

It felt like ground movement. “Do you realize you used the money to pay for the wedding of the man who betrayed me and the sister who broke my heart?”

Mom touched my arm, but I resisted. Sorry, Taylor. This was never meant for you.”

“How much?” I requested whispering. “How much did you take?”

Dad said, “About $40,000,” turning away.

Oh, I gasped. Forty grand? Are you crazy? How could you harm me?”

Jake held my shoulder. “Taylor, let’s talk about this calmly.”

“Calmly?” I snapped. Jake, I’m afraid! Can’t help! They ruined all!”

Dad stood and approached. We helped your sister out of love. We thought it fit.”

You call this love?”I spat. You owe daughter? Behind her. Dad, this is selfish. Spare me!”

Now Mom cried. “Please, Taylor. Understand our viewpoint. Your parents. We meant no harm.”

“But you did,” I muttered, devastated by their betrayal.

Jake held me to stay standing. Looking over his shoulder at my parents, I knew everything would change. My best buddies betrayed me. No idea what to do.

After Jake departed, I walked to my room with a thousand ideas, knowing additional arguments were fruitless. Calling Aunt Freya after closing the door. As her mother’s younger sister, she calmed our crazy family.

“Taylor, sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Nervously, Aunt Freya questioned.

Aunt Freya, may I stay? Whispering, “I must leave,” I tried to enunciate clearly.

    Come along. Dear, what happened?”

Shaking hands, I packed my essentials in a little suitcase. The tale is lengthy. “I’ll explain everything when I arrive.”

Aunt Freya hugged me. The warmth and pleasant smell of her home calmed her. She listened to my feelings in her living room.

“I can’t believe they hurt you,” she shrugged. “Your parents have really crossed the line this time.”

Aunt Freya, I know nothing. Being lost.”

Aunt Freya showed me 12 parent-child abuse websites.

You have company, Taylor. Many have defended themselves in similar situations.”

What can I do? They left me huge debt.”

“You could call the police,” she advised.

Staring at her, I was stunned. The police? Really?”

“Yes, Taylor. These actions were illegal. It was fraud. Report them.”

Aunt Freya and I went to police the next morning. I was anxious and determined to describe my parents’ activities.

Officer took careful notes while listening. This is serious, Miss Davis. Your claim seems strong, but we’ll investigate.”

A few days later, my parents were arrested for fraud. I could tell they were furious at me during our brief call.

“How could you do this to us, Taylor?” Mom yelled. Your people! We did it for family!”

“For the family?” Fired back. You destroyed my Talia and Carter wedding future! Is family affected?”

This was dramatized by Talia and Carter. Aunt Freya demanded communication.

“Taylor, this is ridiculous!” Talia yelled. “You’re tearing the family apart!”

“You did that when you married Carter,” I say. “You both knew what you were doing.”

Carter scoffed. Overreacting, Taylor. Money alone.”

“Just money?” I repeated, amazed. “Don’t test my patience!”

Glaring Aunt Freya came. Leave “Enough!” Now Taylor needs less stress.”

Grumbling, they left, but the harm was done. Carter, Talia, and my parents ignored me. My only supporters were Jake and Aunt Freya.

Always my rock, Jake. His compassion comforted us continually. In “We’ll get through this, Taylor,” he said. “I promise.”

Jake held my hand on Aunt Freya’s porch one night. You chose well. Protect yourselves.”

Looking at him, I cried. “I hope so. It feels like everything is falling apart.”

“Maybe,” he mumbled. Sometimes fitting requires disassembly. Aunt Freya and I will assist with this onerous endeavor.”

Aunt Freya nods. Jake is right. We back Taylor. Stronger than imagined. Never forget.”

Despite the lengthy and stressful legal process, justice was done. Unknown to me, the bank seized many of my parents’ assets.

Forgive them? Sometimes. Ultimately, my parents. I couldn’t ignore their behavior. Despite family estrangement, I persisted.

My life slowly recovered. Aunt Freya got me a nice job and apartment. Saving and paying her was simple.

Often, I question my behavior. Was I too harsh on my parents? But I recall treachery, deceit, and hurt. What would you change? You may have to defend yourself alone.
