Robin Williams was a phenomenal actor with wild comic talents. Kids loved him for his roles in family-oriented films such as “Aladdin,” “Jumanji,” “Happy Feet,” and “Night at the Museum.” Tragically, Robin died by suicide on August 11, 2014, at his home in Tiburon, California. Born on July 21, 1951, he would have turned 73 on July 21, 2024. He left behind three children—Zelda, 34, Zachary, 41, and Cody, 32. The movie star had been married three times and was single at the time of his death.
Robin and his first wife, Valerie Velardi, married in 1978 and parted ways in 1988. They had a son, Zachary Williams, during their marriage. The actor then married Marsha Garces in April 1989, and they had two children, Zelda and Cody Williams. In 2008, Marsha filed for divorce from Robin, citing irreconcilable differences. She asked for joint legal custody of their children, with Robin getting visitation rights and paying spousal support. Marsha also requested the court to divide their property once all assets were tallied.
During Marsha and Robin’s marriage, the couple worked together on several productions, including “Jakob the Liar,” “Patch Adams,” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” After their divorce was finalized, Robin married Susan Schneider in 2011, but they divorced shortly in 2014 and had no children together.
Robin and Marsha raised their children Zelda and Cody in their San Francisco home, located at the intersection of Sea Cliff Avenue and El Camino Del Mar. The magnificent property, which is 10,600 square feet, was renovated by Robin when he moved in with Marsha in the 1990s. Built in 1926, the mansion has over 20 rooms, six bedrooms, five full bathrooms, and three half bathrooms.
The property, with glorious views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco Bay, Marin Headlands, and the Pacific Ocean, was listed on the market for $25 million in October 2023. Steven Mavromihalis, the listing agent, noted that Robin and Marsha expanded the home from its original size while maintaining the rare and valuable materials used in building it in 1926.
The Oscar-winning actor and Marsha added a movie theater to the home, which also boasts a grand foyer, a central focal point that leads to its palatial public rooms. One can access the outdoors and south gardens through double French patio doors and via the media room, whiskey room, library, and billiards room.
The outdoors is home to breathtaking lawns, bushes, gardens, flowering plants, mature trees, and hedges that surround the entire estate. It has several sitting areas and unhindered views, making it perfect for entertaining. The home also has a four-car garage with side-by-side and tandem parking.
The spacious living room has a ceiling lined with wooden beams, a wood-burning fireplace, and a French door leading to the terrace. The eat-in kitchen is spectacular and adjoins the butler’s pantry. It has abundant counter space and triple sinks, and the custom cabinets are made from the finest material. Off the kitchen is the media entertainment room with a half bath that leads to the east lawn and outdoor dining patio.
The primary suite is well-designed to create an aura of peace and tranquility with views of the Pacific Ocean and Golden Gate Bridge. It has a bath, and its dressing room and closet are large. A separate walk-in shower is found in the soaking tub. The upper level of the home has four bedrooms, two full baths, and a home office.
The home also features several hidden safe rooms and a vast ventilated walk-in vault. The garden level hosts a sauna, a one-bedroom guest apartment, and a fitness center with a full bath. A wine cellar, pantry, and endless storage closets are also on this level.
Marsha opened up about living with Robin in this house. She said Robin loved shopping, and because they had a mansion that needed to look great, they purchased modern and unknown art for decoration. Marsha combined new, old, historic, and hand-made pieces in decorating the house. Robin had a fascination with toys, so the house was also filled with a collection of those. However, some items were extra special because Marsha and the actor would gift each other pieces of art on special days such as birthdays.
In 2018, Marsha put their art collection on sale. She said the two loved these pieces because they made them laugh, think, and treasure each other. In 2019, the youngest son of “The World’s Greatest Dad” star also honored Robin when he got married at this mansion, where he and Marsha raised him.
Robin was proud of his children in different ways. However, as a dad, he didn’t view himself as perfect or the world’s greatest father. He just saw himself as a work-in-progress father who loved his kids. Zachary graduated from New York University with a degree in rhetoric and pursued his dreams as an actor and director. Zelda made her mark as an actress in horror movies. Meanwhile, the dad of three described his son Cody, who is also an actor, as “kind but brilliant.”
Cody Williams honored Robin on July 21, 2019, when he married Maria Flores Williams on what would have been the late actor’s 68th birthday. The actor’s son wed Maria in the late actor’s house in San Francisco, where he and Marsha raised their children. This home is also where Cody and his wife fell in love over six years before they got married. Cody and Maria included a tribute to commemorate their lost loved ones during the wedding. The couple also lit three wicks to showcase their undying love for their family members who had passed away.
Zelda was excited that July 21 each year would mean more than just the day their father was born and the last day she saw Robin. This day would also be Cody and Maria’s wedding anniversary. To Zelda, it also signifies the day she got a new sister, Maria.
Fans also commended Cody for honoring his father in such a sweet way. One fan wrote, “What a wonderful gesture to get married on your late father’s birthday. He would be so proud of you. The very best to the two of you.” Another fan concurred, saying, “How lovely a gesture for an excellent comedian and great actor!” Another fan said Cody included his dad in the wedding, writing, “A son just wanted his dad’s spirit there.”
Robin’s children continue to make him proud even after he is gone. They have charted their own paths in the entertainment industry as actors and directors, striving to honor and remember their dad on special occasions.
