Political Differences Impacting John Legend and Kanye West’s Friendship

John Legend, the 43-year-old singer, recently spoke about the current state of his friendship with Kanye West, highlighting how politics, particularly West’s support for Donald Trump and his 2020 presidential run, have strained their relationship. Speaking on The Axe Files podcast, Legend mentioned, “We aren’t friends as much as we used to be. I think our public disagreements on his political actions and support for Trump made sustaining our friendship difficult.”

A History of Collaboration and Changing Dynamics

Legend and West, 45, have a history of close collaboration, working together on several songs over the years, including hits like “Number One” in 2005 and “It’s Over” in 2008. However, their relationship has shifted, especially after West was upset with Legend for not supporting his presidential bid. “He was upset that I didn’t support his run for presidency…and we really haven’t been close since then,” Legend explained.

Legend Reflects on the Evolution of Their Friendship

In a previous interview with The Sunday Times in 2020, Legend did not attribute their cooling friendship to politics but to life’s natural progression, citing geographical distance and personal life changes. “Our interaction was almost always about creativity and music…we’re in different places now,” he said.

Online Spat and Reconciliation

In 2018, West and Legend had a public disagreement over West’s support for Trump, with West posting a screenshot of their text exchange. Despite their differing views, they appeared to reconcile shortly after at Chrissy Teigen’s baby shower, as West shared a selfie with Legend, captioning it “We got love. Agree to disagree.”
