…and the loudest reactions came not from the trophy announcements but from the family photos, the matching gowns, and one particularly moving speech that quickly spread across social media.

The evening honored achievements across television, but several of its most talked-about moments happened outside the usual winner announcements. Fashion, family appearances, and deeply personal speeches quickly became part of the night's bigger story. | Source: Getty Images

Michael J. Fox’s Emotional Emmy Comeback

Michael J. Fox, 65, made his first Emmy appearance in 13 years, arriving to accept the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award. He thanked his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their children, Sam, Aquinnah, Schuyler, and Esmé, for their sacrifices, patience, and love.

Fox spoke candidly about the years he spent hiding his Parkinson’s diagnosis, admitting he once worried it might change how audiences saw him. He said he was ultimately met with support rather than the rejection he feared, and that the encouragement kept him working.

Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1991 at age 29 and disclosed it publicly seven years later. His guest role as Gerry on Shrinking, opposite Harrison Ford, marked his first on-screen work since 2020 and earned him an Emmy nomination.

The role came about after Fox reached out to series creator Bill Lawrence, with whom he’d previously worked on Spin City, to ask about joining a show centered on Parkinson’s. Fox has described the experience as unexpectedly freeing, allowing him to work without the physical pressures he once faced on set.

Mariska Hargitay’s Historic Hosting Night

Mariska Hargitay hosted the ceremony, becoming the first woman to lead the Emmys in 15 years, since Jane Lynch in 2011. She was also nominated for her own work that night, adding an extra layer of significance to the evening.

Hargitay has said she learned about the hosting offer while backstage performing in her play Every Brilliant Thing, when NBCUniversal Television Studios Chairman Pearlena Igbokwe called. Her first instinct, she’s said, was to wonder whether she was about to be fired.

She arrived at the ceremony with husband Peter Hermann and their three children, August, 20, Andrew, 14, and Amaya, 15, turning the red carpet into a full family outing on what was already a milestone night for her career.

The Matching Mother-Daughter Gowns Spark Debate

Hargitay and daughter Amaya coordinated in nearly identical red Monse gowns covered in sequins and feathers, paired with strappy heels. The brand confirmed the matching looks were a tribute to Hargitay’s late mother, Jayne Mansfield.

Later, at the Governors Gala, Amaya stayed in red while Hargitay changed into a black-and-white look. Photos from both events spread quickly online, and reactions were far from unanimous.

Some commenters called the mother-daughter pairing beautiful and perfectly suited to the occasion, while others argued the dress was too revealing for a 15-year-old and that Hargitay appeared more covered up than her daughter. The gowns weren’t the only detail people noticed.

Online commenters also weighed in on family resemblance, with several pointing out how much Hargitay’s sons appeared to take after her. The mix of praise, criticism, and family comparisons kept the images circulating well after the ceremony ended.

Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin’s Divisive Red Carpet Look

Lisa Rinna arrived in a dramatic black gown with sculptural detailing and a high slit, while husband Harry Hamlin wore a black suit paired with loose, wide-leg trousers. Between the two looks, viewers had no shortage of opinions.

Hamlin’s trousers became a particular focus of discussion, with some commenters questioning the fit and others joking about the proportions. Not everyone was critical, though, as several viewers praised his glasses, haircut, and overall styling.

Rinna’s gown also drew mixed reactions, with some calling the look bold and others describing her appearance as unrecognizable. As with much of the night’s fashion, the split reactions said as much about the audience as the outfits themselves.

Taken together, Fox’s emotional return, Hargitay’s history-making hosting turn, and the wardrobe debates surrounding the Hargitay and Hamlin-Rinna families made the 2026 Emmys memorable well beyond its award announcements.
