me. I knew exactly what he was implying, and so did everyone else sitting at that table who suddenly found their coffee cups fascinating.

Twelve Years of Quiet Insults
Greg never mocked me when it was just the two of us. His comments always arrived with an audience — a passing remark about pace, appearance, or people who “aren’t built for summer events,” delivered with a smirk that made denial easy if anyone called him out.
I absorbed it because the work mattered more than his tone. Twelve years of quietly fixing what nobody else would touch had earned me that much patience, even if it never earned me his respect.
The Water Park Announcement
During the latest briefing, Greg leaned back with that familiar look and said, “Linda, you’re coming to the retreat this year, right? It’s a water park this time. Mandatory attendance. Real team players don’t hide.”
Several coworkers looked down at the table. Nobody needed it spelled out — Greg had spent years making sure everyone understood who his comments were really for.
Sitting in the Parking Lot
For two weeks, I thought seriously about staying home. The idea of Greg getting one more chance to humiliate me in front of the team made the whole event feel like a trap I’d walked into willingly.
On the morning of the retreat, I drove to the water park anyway and sat in my car until the coffee in my cup went cold. I knew Greg expected me to skip it. Staying in that parking lot would have handed him exactly what he wanted.
Walking Through the Gates
So I got out of the car. When I walked through the gates, Greg was near the main lockers with half the team gathered around him, and the moment he spotted me, his eyebrows shot up.
“Well,” he said, loud enough for everyone nearby to hear, “I’ll admit it, Linda. I didn’t think you’d actually show up today.” A few coworkers laughed the nervous kind of laugh people give when they’re not sure it’s safe not to.
I didn’t answer him. I walked straight past the group toward the small platform near the pool, picked up the microphone that had been set up for announcements, and asked everyone for their attention.
