Now, with Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, reportedly preparing to attend school in Britain beginning in September, Harry’s earlier remarks have taken on an entirely different meaning. The Sussexes are expected to establish a private UK residence while keeping their Montecito home and their property in Portugal.
The return represents one of Harry and Meghan’s biggest lifestyle changes since they stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020.

King Charles III is reportedly an important part of that decision. The monarch was informed of the family’s relocation plans shortly before they became public and is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more private time with Harry, Meghan and his grandchildren.
The move follows another significant development. In July 2026, Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet reunited with Charles during a family visit to Britain, marking the King’s first meeting with the Sussex children in roughly four years.
But clues that Harry was considering what Britain might offer his children appeared much earlier.
During the September 2025 WellChild Awards in London, Harry reportedly spoke with singer Joss Stone, who had recently returned to Britain with her own family.
Their conversation reportedly moved beyond polite small talk. Harry was interested in how Joss and her children were settling back into life in the UK and why she had chosen to return.

She later recalled that the Duke spoke positively about British schools and the importance of children growing up with a strong community around them.
At the time, those remarks could easily have been interpreted as nothing more than one parent exchanging thoughts with another.

Seen through the lens of the Sussexes’ reported 2026 return, however, they appear much more revealing.
Harry was apparently thinking about precisely the things now expected to become part of Archie and Lilibet’s lives: British schools, extended family, longtime friends and a stronger connection to the country where their father grew up.

The timing is particularly fascinating because Harry’s position once appeared far more definitive.
Following the loss of his security appeal in May 2025, Harry told the BBC:
His concern centered largely on security.
Harry had repeatedly argued that he did not feel able to safely bring Meghan and their children to Britain under the arrangements available after the couple stopped serving as working royals.

That makes today’s situation striking.
Something has clearly shifted enough for Harry and Meghan to consider an extended family base in Britain, although their exact future security arrangements have not been publicly disclosed.
The question could become one of the most closely watched aspects of their return.
Harry’s taxpayer-funded protection was reduced after he stepped back from royal duties, leading to years of legal challenges. Any new assessment would involve the UK’s system for determining protection based on circumstances and risk rather than automatically restoring the arrangements Harry once received.
And with the Sussexes returning as private individuals rather than working members of the Royal Family, questions about who ultimately pays for additional security are likely to attract considerable public attention.
Still, the broader picture has changed dramatically.
Only a little over a year ago, Harry publicly struggled with the idea that his children might never properly experience his homeland.

Now Archie and Lilibet are reportedly preparing to attend school there.
The family has reunited with King Charles.
Harry is expected to spend substantially more time in Britain.
And comments that once appeared to be little more than an interested father’s observations about schools, family and community suddenly sound almost like early hints of a decision still taking shape.

None of those moments alone proved Harry was planning to return.
Together, however, they suggest the Sussex family’s latest move may not have happened as suddenly as it first appeared.
Perhaps the more intriguing question now isn’t simply why Harry and Meghan are coming back.

It’s what changed enough to make a return that once seemed impossible finally feel possible.
