She did, however, jokingly acknowledge the Professor’s appeal, describing Russell Johnson as handsome, intelligent and funny. She also remembered being particularly close friends with Bob Denver and Alan Hale Jr.
Time has sadly taken most of the original cast. Jim Backus died in 1989, followed by Alan Hale Jr. in 1990 and Natalie Schafer in 1991. Bob Denver died in 2005, Russell Johnson in 2014 and Dawn Wells in 2020.
Tina Louise, who played Ginger, remains the surviving member of the original seven castaways. Her relationship with the series has sometimes been complicated, particularly because the enormous popularity of Ginger contributed to typecasting. Nevertheless, the character remains inseparable from television history.
Perhaps that is why discovering these old mistakes doesn’t diminish Gilligan’s Island. If anything, they make watching it even more enjoyable.
Visible studio buildings, mysterious extra passengers, wandering wedding rings and decidedly low-tech submarine effects offer glimpses of the people working behind the fantasy. They remind viewers that the supposedly remote island was created with sets, props, clever camera angles and plenty of imagination.
Nearly six decades after the final original episode aired, audiences are still watching closely enough to discover those details.
For a “three-hour tour,” Gilligan and his fellow castaways certainly managed to stay with us for a remarkably long time.
