I went to my children and assured them they had done nothing wrong. Then I returned to the table. There were already serious financial matters involving Courtney’s family that I had intended to address privately, but their treatment of my children made one thing clear: I could no longer keep protecting adults who showed so little concern for others. I gave Walter documents showing that his son Lance had improperly taken money from my engineering firm and that substantial funds appeared to have been diverted from Walter’s pediatric charity. The records also indicated that Shirley and Courtney had been involved in concealing some of those transactions. I told Walter that the evidence had been preserved and would be handled through the appropriate legal channels.
The celebration ended in confusion and painful questions. I did not stay to watch the family turn on one another. I gathered Lucas and Paige and walked with them toward the ocean. Courtney followed and apologized, but I told her that the deepest problem was not simply what her relatives had said. It was that when our children needed their mother to defend their dignity, she had chosen silence. I ended my financial support for her relatives and sought legal advice regarding our marriage and the children’s welfare rather than trying to settle everything through anger.
Over the following months, investigators and attorneys dealt with the financial allegations according to the evidence, while Walter worked to restore money that had been lost from his charity. Courtney and I separated, and arrangements for our children were determined through the proper process. A year later, I took Lucas and Paige to the Oregon coast to visit my mother. Lucas flew a kite while Paige made crafts with her grandmother, and the simplicity of the afternoon stayed with me. I could not undo what my children had heard in San Diego, but I could make sure they grew up knowing that belonging is not determined by bloodlines, wealth, or where someone assigns you a seat. It is shown by who makes room for you with love and respect.
