The Delivery Driver’s Warning Who Saved My Son…

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodAugust 12, 20265 Mins Read

    My stomach dropped.

    I immediately called Megan.

    She sounded completely calm.

She told me our son had eaten his lunch and was upstairs sleeping. Nothing in her voice suggested that anything was wrong.

But Andre’s warning wouldn’t leave my mind.

I called Ryan, and we both rushed home.

Before going inside, we went directly to the garbage cans.

We began moving bags and other trash until we discovered something that made my hands shake.

Hidden beneath the garbage were several medication bottles.

Among them were children’s cough medicine and an over-the-counter sleep aid. Underneath the bottles was a pharmacy bag.

Megan’s name was printed on it.

I immediately called our pediatrician and explained what we had found. We were told to check our son right away and take him to the emergency room.

    Ryan and I ran inside.

    Megan was downstairs.

Our son was upstairs in his crib.

The moment I reached him, I knew something wasn’t right.

    He wasn’t simply sleeping.

    He was unconscious.

I lifted him from the crib, and his little body felt frighteningly limp against mine.

Megan insisted that we were overreacting. She tried to convince us there was no reason to take him to the hospital.

    We didn’t listen.

Ryan and I rushed our son to the emergency room, where doctors immediately began running tests.

Eventually, we received the answer we had been terrified to hear.

Our baby had been exposed to a sedating medication.

Police became involved, and investigators began questioning Megan.

At first, she denied doing anything wrong. But as investigators examined the evidence and confronted her with inconsistencies in her explanation, her story began falling apart.

    Eventually, Megan admitted the truth.

Whenever our son resisted taking a nap, she had been giving him small amounts of medication to make him sleep.

It wasn’t because he needed the medicine.

She simply found caring for him easier when he was asleep.

Suddenly, all those evenings when I had noticed my son seemed unusually tired made horrifying sense.

    But one question remained.

How had Andre known to warn us?

We later learned that the delivery driver had seen Megan carrying a bag toward our trash cans. While she was disposing of it, Andre noticed a medicine bottle fall out.

Something about the situation bothered him.

He remembered that he had previously tried speaking through our Ring camera without receiving a response. Realizing the microphone probably wasn’t working, he came up with another way to get our attention.

    He found the cardboard.

    He wrote the warning.

And he held it directly in front of the camera.

Those four words may have saved our son’s life.

Thankfully, our little boy recovered, but the experience changed our family permanently.

We became far more cautious about who we trusted with our child. Every medication in our home was secured, and we stopped dismissing small changes in our son’s behavior simply because there appeared to be an innocent explanation.

About a month later, another package arrived.

    Andre was delivering it.

By then, we had repaired our Ring microphone.

Andre placed the package on the porch, looked directly into the camera, and paused.

“I hope the little guy is doing okay,”

    he said.

Ryan immediately answered through the speaker.

    “He is. Because of you.”

    Andre smiled.

Then he turned around, walked back toward his delivery truck, and continued with his day.

To him, perhaps it had simply been a moment when something didn’t look right and he decided not to ignore it.

To us, it was much more than that.

Andre had no obligation to investigate what he saw. He could have delivered our packages, returned to his truck, and forgotten about the medicine bottle beside the garbage.

    Instead, he paid attention.

And when he couldn’t use his voice to warn us, he found another way.

We’ll always remember him as the stranger who noticed something was wrong—and refused to stay silent.
