From the balcony overlooking our engagement celebration, I saw something I never expected.

My fiancée, Greta Wallace, deliberately shoved my mother, Helen, into a decorative marble fountain.

For a moment, the music continued as though nothing had happened.

Several guests laughed awkwardly.

Someone commented that my mother’s simple blue dress had spoiled the photographs.

I walked downstairs, helped my mother out of the water, and quietly placed my jacket around her shoulders.
