Which Way Is the Correct Way to Hang Toilet Paper? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

Kelly WhitewoodBy Kelly WhitewoodAugust 7, 20263 Mins Read

Should the loose end hang behind the roll, close to the wall, or should it drape over the front where it’s easy to reach? While it may seem like a trivial issue, people have surprisingly strong opinions on the subject.

Those who prefer the paper hanging underneath often argue that it creates a neater appearance. With the loose end tucked closer to the wall, the roll is less likely to unravel accidentally. Many pet owners and parents also appreciate this position because curious cats, playful dogs, and small children often find it more difficult to spin the roll into a pile of paper on the floor.

Supporters of the “under” method also say it gives the bathroom a cleaner, more organized look. Since the edge of the paper isn’t immediately visible, the roll appears tidier and less distracting. For some people, it’s simply the way they’ve always done it, making it feel completely natural.

On the other hand, those firmly on Team Over believe their method is the clear winner. With the loose end hanging over the front, it’s much easier to locate and grab without fumbling around. This can be especially helpful for children, older adults, or anyone with reduced hand mobility.

The “over” position is also considered more hygienic by many people because it minimizes the need to touch the wall or reach behind the roll while tearing off a sheet. In busy households or public restrooms, that small convenience can make a noticeable difference.

Interestingly, this isn’t just a matter of personal preference. The debate has an answer rooted in history.

When Seth Wheeler patented the perforated toilet paper roll in 1891, his original patent illustrations clearly showed the paper hanging over the front of the roll. Those drawings have become one of the strongest pieces of evidence in the long-running discussion, leading many people to consider the “over” position the original intended design.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the debate. Plenty of people continue to prefer the “under” method because it works better for their homes, especially if they have curious pets or simply like the appearance more.

In reality, there may never be complete agreement. One household’s perfect solution may be another household’s biggest annoyance. And perhaps that’s exactly why this simple question has remained so entertaining for generations.

Whether you’re firmly on Team Under or proudly support Team Over, one thing is certain: few everyday objects have inspired as many playful arguments as the humble toilet paper roll. Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that create the biggest conversations—and that’s part of the fun.
