Many people use the term “sebaceous cyst” to describe a small lump beneath the skin, but in reality, many of these bumps are actually epidermoid cysts (also called epidermal inclusion cysts). These cysts are common, usually noncancerous, and often grow slowly over time. In many cases, they don’t require treatment unless they become painful, inflamed, infected, or interfere with daily activities.
