Chapter 1: The Only Thing He Left Me
Three days after my father’s funeral, my older sister changed the locks on our family home.
I discovered it when I returned from the grocery store and my key would not turn. Through the front window, I could see Rachel moving around inside as though the house had always belonged to her.
When she finally opened the door, she remained in the doorway.
“You need to find somewhere else to stay,” she said.
I stared at her, certain grief had made me misunderstand.
Dad had raised both of us in that house. My bedroom was upstairs. My clothes, documents, and nearly everything I owned were still inside.
Then Rachel reminded me of the will.
She had received the house.
I had received only Dad’s old silver watch.
“It’s legally mine now,” she said. “You can collect your things, but you can’t keep living here.”
The words hurt because I had spent the final year of Dad’s life caring for him. I prepared his meals, organized his medication, drove him to appointments, and sat beside him on the nights when pain kept him awake.
Rachel visited occasionally, but she was rarely there long.
I never expected a reward for caring for him. Still, I could not understand why Dad had left her the home while giving me something that no longer even worked.
The watch had stopped at 4:17—the exact time he died.
