A Routine Welfare Check Led to an Unexpected Family Reunion
For a police officer with more than a decade of experience, a 3 a.m. welfare check is usually a routine part of the job. One early morning, however, a call involving an elderly woman became something far more personal than he could have anticipated.
Instead of finding someone engaged in suspicious activity, he found an elderly woman standing beneath a streetlamp in a thin nightgown, cold, frightened, and quietly repeating the name “Cal.”
The officer turned off the cruiser’s emergency lights, offered her his jacket, and remained with her while additional assistance was arranged. What began as a simple act of care would later become connected to a chapter of his own life that had remained unanswered for many years.
