    Chapter 1: The Smile They Misread

    They assumed I was foolish because I smiled.

    For five years, my Italian in-laws cut me apart across dinner tables in a language they believed I could not understand. I smiled politely, passed the bread, poured the wine, and memorized every word.

    The first time it happened, Matteo and I had been married only three months.

    His mother, Bianca, filled my glass with red wine and said sweetly in English, “You are too thin, Elena. Eat.”

    Then she turned toward her daughters and murmured in Italian, “At least she has a pretty face. Such a shame about the empty head.”

    Laughter slipped around the table like spilled oil.

    I lowered my eyes and cut into my lasagna.

    Under the table, Matteo squeezed my knee.

    Not to comfort me.

    To warn me.

    Later, in the car, he said, “Don’t be sensitive,” even though I had not said a single word.
