Chapter 7: The Protection That Destroyed Them
The truth came out slowly, painfully, between refills of coffee and Maya’s sleepy questions.
Sloane had orchestrated Hannah’s disappearance.
She had created new documents, moved money, arranged an apartment under another name, and convinced Hannah that leaving Julian was the only way to keep the baby alive and hidden.
Then she had let Julian mourn a woman who was still breathing.
She had let Maya grow up in shadows.
Julian stared through the diner window at the rain-slicked street, his reflection looking back like a stranger.
Power had always been his language. Control had been his shield. Fear had been the currency of the world he ruled.
And all of it had led here.
To a daughter who knew pancakes better than she knew him.
To a woman who had spent years running from dangers he had helped create.
“I can fix this,” he said.
