Chapter 4: Cover It and Smile
At six in the morning, Adrian opened the bathroom door without knocking.
He tossed a luxury makeup bag onto the counter, the gold zipper glinting under the harsh light.
“My mother’s coming for lunch,” he said.
His eyes moved over my face with no remorse, only calculation.
“Cover all that up and smile.”
I looked at the makeup bag. Then I looked at him.
He mistook my silence for surrender.
“Do not embarrass me again,” he added.
Then he left.
I waited until his footsteps faded before reaching for the hidden phone. My hands were steady now. Cold, but steady.
The final evidence package was ready: records of his financial theft, statements from the concierge, and the prepared legal steps my attorney had instructed me to take.
Adrian wanted a performance.
