Chapter 4: The File That Found Her

On a Tuesday morning, a sealed client file landed on Elena’s desk.

The label read: Harrington Legacy Trust.

It should have been routine. Another old-money estate dispute. Another family trying to hide greed behind legal language.

Then she opened the file.

Tucked inside was a scanned hotel receipt from seven years ago. The same date. The same suite. The same Wilshire Boulevard hotel that still appeared in her nightmares like a locked room in her mind.

Beneath it was a copy of the note.

“Call it destiny. Do not try to find me.”

Elena stopped breathing.

There was also a second page: a trust document. Her name appeared on the first line. Under beneficiary, in cold black ink, was a name she had never seen before.

Her heart hammered as she reached for the paper.
