During the summer of 2018, Chris Watts began an affair with a coworker, Nichol Kessinger. According to investigators, Shanann had started suspecting something was wrong. On August 13, 2018, after returning home from a business trip, she confronted her husband about the affair.

What happened next horrified the country.

Investigators later said Watts confessed to strangling Shanann inside their home after an argument. He then wrapped her body in a blanket and moved it downstairs while their daughters were still alive inside the house.

According to prison interviews and court documents, little Bella reportedly asked her father questions as he moved their mother’s body.

The family was then driven to a remote oil site owned by Anadarko Petroleum, where Watts worked.

At that isolated location, investigators say Watts murdered CeCe first before killing Bella moments later. One detail that has continued haunting people who followed the case was Bella’s reported final plea to her father when she realized what was happening to her sister.

Afterward, Watts disposed of the bodies at the oil site, hiding his daughters inside oil tanks and burying Shanann in a shallow grave nearby.

For days afterward, he publicly portrayed himself as a desperate husband searching for his missing family. During television interviews outside the family home, he pleaded for Shanann and the girls to return, telling reporters the house felt incomplete without them.

But investigators quickly noticed inconsistencies in his story.

After failing a polygraph examination, Watts eventually confessed. In November 2018, he pleaded guilty to multiple counts of first-degree murder and related charges in order to avoid the death penalty.

He was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without parole and later transferred to Dodge Correctional Institution in Waupun due to safety concerns.

One of the most debated aspects of the case today is whether Watts’ later expressions of remorse are genuine.

In prison interviews, he reportedly admitted that Bella’s final words still haunt him and claimed he hears them whenever he closes his eyes. For many people, however, those statements do little to lessen the horror of the crimes.

Others argue that remorse after such calculated actions cannot undo the devastation left behind.

What continues to make the case especially painful for many is the contrast between the family’s public image and the reality investigators uncovered. Videos once shared online showing birthday parties, family vacations, and ordinary parenting moments became deeply unsettling after the truth emerged.

Years later, the murders of Shanann, Bella, CeCe, and unborn baby Nico remain a case many people still struggle to comprehend — not only because of the violence itself, but because it came from someone the victims trusted most.
