    My father tried to recover with a laugh.

    “This is emotional exaggeration,” he said. “Family matters should stay private.”

    Marcus Vale’s expression turned cold.

    “Private cruelty has public consequences when it builds public lies.”

    That sentence struck harder than anything I could have said.
