Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert’s “We Were Us” — A Duet Nearly a Decade in the Making

Even though Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert’s hit “We Were Us” debuted on Urban’s 2013 album Fuse, the collaboration was actually years in the making.

The First Spark: 2005 Tour Memories

Urban revealed to ABC News Radio that the idea for a duet with Lambert first took root back in 2005, when she opened for him on tour. “We used to do a song every night during my set,” he recalled. “I always loved singing with her, and I thought our voices went really well together.”

That early musical chemistry stuck with Urban, and from that moment, he kept searching for the perfect song that would capture the blend of their voices.

    Finding the Right Song

Nearly a decade later, when Urban heard “We Were Us,” he immediately knew he had found the one. “I just called her up and sent her the song, and she loved it,” he said. “Her and Blake [Shelton] actually came to the studio and hung out for a few hours… We sang it together and it was done.”

The recording came together effortlessly — a testament to their natural connection as vocal partners.

A Long Wait Worth Every Moment

After years of waiting for the right project, the result was a duet that country fans instantly embraced. Their performance of “We Were Us” at the 2013 CMA Awards became one of the standout moments of the night — a mix of emotion, energy, and undeniable chemistry.

Backstage after the show, Lambert playfully teased Urban, saying that since the song appeared on his album, he now owed her a guest spot on her next one.

    The Start of Something Special

The success of “We Were Us” not only highlighted Urban and Lambert’s vocal harmony but also their mutual respect and creative synergy. It may have taken nearly ten years for the collaboration to happen — but when it did, it proved well worth the wait.
