Kelly Clarkson Casts a Spell with Her “Hocus Pocus” Halloween Tribute
“Hocus Pocus”: A Halloween Classic
When Hocus Pocus first hit theaters on July 16, 1993, Disney hoped to draw in families during the summer break. Despite earning just $8.1 million on its opening weekend—placing behind Jurassic Park, In the Line of Fire, and The Firm—the film would go on to achieve cult status.
Decades later, the story of the mischievous Sanderson Sisters—Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker), and Mary (Kathy Najimy)—has become an essential part of Halloween traditions, inspiring countless re-watches, reunions, and themed celebrations every October.
Kelly Clarkson Brings the Sanderson Sisters Back to Life
In the 2019 Halloween episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the talk show host and powerhouse vocalist paid tribute to the film with a full-on Hocus Pocus transformation.
Clarkson appeared as Winifred Sanderson, complete with Midler’s signature fiery red curls and emerald velvet cloak. Her backup singers joined her as Mary and Sarah Sanderson, perfectly capturing the trio’s witchy charm.
“I Put a Spell On You” — Kelly’s Magical Rendition
Channeling Winifred’s iconic scene from the movie, Clarkson performed a soulful and electrifying version of “I Put a Spell On You,” the 1956 Screamin’ Jay Hawkins hit immortalized by Bette Midler in Hocus Pocus.
As Kelly strutted around the studio, surrounded by dancers and costumed performers, she turned the daytime TV stage into a Halloween spectacle. Her powerhouse vocals and theatrical flair brought both nostalgia and energy to the performance — proving that nobody does a Halloween show quite like Kelly Clarkson.
A Wickedly Fun Tribute
Fans and viewers raved about the performance, calling it one of the best Halloween episodes in talk show history. With her humor, showmanship, and unmatched voice, Kelly once again reminded audiences why she’s not just a singer or host — she’s a true entertainer who knows how to put on a show worth remembering.
