Julianne & Derek Hough Reflect on Their DWTS Journey—and Hopes for More Time on the Dance Floor
Siblings and Dancing With the Stars royalty, Julianne and Derek Hough, have been part of the show’s fabric since Seasons 4 and 5, respectively. With eight Mirrorball trophies between them (Derek with six, Julianne with two), their influence on the long-running series is undeniable—and still evolving.
While both have since stepped out of the competitive spotlight, they haven’t left the ballroom behind. Derek has been serving as a judge since Season 29, and Julianne—who previously sat at the judges’ table starting in Season 19—joined Alfonso Ribeiro as co-host in Season 32. Still, they each found ways last season to return to their roots.
In a joyful surprise, Julianne performed a live routine with Valentin Chmerkovskiy, thrilling fans as she stepped down from the skybox—where she typically interviews contestants—and revealed a hidden dance costume beneath her outfit. “I miss being on the dance floor,” she shared with TV Insider. “So I pitched a fake-out moment to the producers, and they loved it. Val and I choreographed it—it was just so much fun!”
Balancing her hosting role with dancing full-time is tricky, Julianne admits. “I don’t know how I could do both… but maybe that just means more little performances here and there.” As for her co-host dynamic with Alfonso Ribeiro? “We’re a winning duo,” she says proudly.
Derek, too, made a return to the dance floor in Season 33 with his longtime friend and fellow champ Mark Ballas. While his judge duties make regular performances difficult, Derek is open to more moments like it—schedule permitting. “If I’m not on tour, I’d love to dance more on the show,” he says.
As DWTS looks ahead to its 34th season, it may also face a shift in location. Its longtime home at Television City in Los Angeles is undergoing major renovations, potentially prompting a move. Julianne, ever optimistic, sees the silver lining: “If it adds more value and brings more jobs, I’m all for it.” Derek reflects more sentimentally: “That space has been a constant for us—it’s wild to think about moving after 20 years.”
Even as their roles have changed, both Houghs remain passionate and connected to DWTS. Whether as judges, hosts, or surprise performers, they continue to bring energy, heart, and undeniable talent to the dance floor.
