Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani’s Fiery New Duet Is the Pop-Country Breakup Anthem of the Year

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani Drop Another Duet: “Hangin’ On”

Country star Blake Shelton and pop icon Gwen Stefani are teaming up once again—with their latest duet, “Hangin’ On,” now officially out. The upbeat track, with a country-pop blend, adds to the couple’s growing catalog of collaborations and offers fans a high-energy groove with a twist of heartbreak.

Though the melody is catchy, the lyrics center around a breakup—something Shelton admits is a bit outside Stefani’s usual comfort zone.

“She’s funny about that stuff,” Shelton said during his appearance on TODAY with Jenna & Friends on May 13. “If she doesn’t feel connected to the lyrics, she hesitates. But this one was just too fun. I told her I didn’t even want to do the song without her.”

“Hangin’ On” is featured on Shelton’s brand-new album, For Recreational Use Only, which dropped on May 9. Reflecting on the project, he shared:

“It’s been four years since the last album, and I’m pumped to finally share this one. I’m always chasing songs that feel fresh—things that haven’t been said or melodies we haven’t heard. I think this album hits that mark.”

    A History of Harmonies
Shelton and Stefani, who married in 2021, have become a favorite musical duo over the years. Their previous collaborations include:

“Go Ahead and Break My Heart” (2016)

“You Make It Feel Like Christmas” (2017)

    “Nobody but You” (2020)

    “Happy Anywhere” (2020)

    “Purple Irises” (2024)

Their duet “Purple Irises” debuted earlier this year during a pre-Super Bowl performance at the TikTok Tailgate, where they captivated a Las Vegas audience with their unique chemistry and style blend. Stefani originally wrote the song while exploring a new musical direction, but it quickly became a duet once both artists connected to it creatively.
