Scotty McCreery Is Passing Down His Passion for Country Music to Son Avery
Country star and American Idol alum Scotty McCreery is nurturing the next generation of country fans—starting right at home with his son, Merrick Avery McCreery.
Since marrying his wife Gabi in 2018, Scotty has embraced both family life and fatherhood. The couple welcomed their son in October 2022, giving him a name full of meaning: Merrick in honor of Gabi’s grandfather, and Avery as a tribute to Avery County, North Carolina, where the couple resides.
Known for his hit “Five More Minutes,” Scotty often shares glimpses of life with little Avery—whether it’s teeing off at golf practice or singing along to tunes in the car. The bond between father and son is evident and heartwarming, and Scotty’s journey as a dad is now finding its way into his music. Songs like “Porch” and “Love Like This” reflect the joy and inspiration he’s found in fatherhood.
A Toddler With Classic Taste: Avery Sings George Strait
In a particularly sweet moment shared on social media, Scotty and Avery are seen in what looks like a home studio, where the toddler belts out the opening line of George Strait’s classic hit “The Chair”:
“Excuse me, but I think you’ve got my chair.”
The 1985 hit—widely considered one of Strait’s finest—topped the country charts in both the U.S. and Canada and was ranked #24 on CMT’s Top 100 Country Songs of All Time.
Clearly, Avery is growing up with an appreciation for the legends. When Scotty asks him, “Who sings that song?” the toddler proudly replies, “George Strait.”
It’s no surprise—Scotty himself was raised on classic country voices like Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Conway Twitty, and now he’s continuing that tradition with his son.
This charming father-son moment is just one example of how Scotty McCreery is keeping the roots of country music alive—one little listener at a time.
