Faith Hill and Tim McGraw: Country Music Royalty, On and Off the Stage
In one of the most cherished love stories in country music, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill continue to blend their personal and professional lives with grace, passion, and a bit of playful banter. From their beginnings on tour together to raising a family and dominating the charts, this country power couple has made their mark—together.
Their journey began in 1996, when Hill opened for McGraw on his Spontaneous Combustion tour. The chemistry was instant. By year’s end, the Mississippi-born Hill and Louisiana-born McGraw were married, and what followed was decades of love, music, and mutual support.
Between the two of them, they’ve sold more than 63 million albums in the U.S., earned multiple Grammy Awards, and raised three daughters. During rehearsals at the ACM Awards in Las Vegas, both were beaming with excitement. “I haven’t been on a stage like this in 10 years,” Hill admitted. “I’m fired up.” McGraw, clearly proud, added, “She’s ready to turn it loose.”
Both turning 50 that year, the couple proved age is no barrier when it comes to passion and performance. Their energy onstage is matched by their deep bond offstage—a chemistry they say is fueled by their differences.
“Faith leans more toward gospel and R&B,” McGraw explained. “I’m more of a ’70s arena rock guy with some Merle Haggard in the mix. But when we come together, there’s a kind of magic.”
That magic has paid off. Their 2000 Soul2Soul tour grossed nearly $49 million, and their 2006 sequel nearly doubled that, becoming one of the highest-grossing tours of the year.
Of course, even the strongest relationships have their ups and downs. “There’s no secret,” Hill said candidly about marriage. “You either want to stay married or you don’t. You work at it, or you don’t.”
McGraw agreed. “You don’t walk away.”
“I’d rather live a life of rocky-road ice cream than vanilla any day,” Hill added with a smile. “Vanilla gets boring fast.”
Laughing, McGraw chimed in: “So I’m not vanilla!”
