After Underwood performed Travis’ hit I Told You So on stage, Travis took the opportunity to invite her to join the star-studded list of Grand Ole Opry members. Underwood, a lifelong fan of Travis—dating back to her days as a preschooler in Checotah, Oklahoma—happily accepted the invitation during the March 15, 2008 performance.

“I was asked by the management of The Grand Ole Opry to come out here and ask you if you would like to be their next member,” Travis said, surprising Underwood on stage. With a smile and a playful pause, Underwood joked, “Let me think about it…” before giving her heartfelt response: “Yes.” Overcome with emotion, Underwood hugged her country idol as the audience cheered her on.

“Oh my gosh, that was so amazing,” Underwood said backstage, still wiping away tears. “I couldn’t have imagined it from a different person. Everyone here kept a tight lip!” she added, clearly moved by the surprise.

The Grand Ole Opry, a historic venue that has attracted country fans for nearly a century, has hosted hundreds of country music icons over the years. Membership is highly coveted, not just for fame but for a genuine passion for the genre, a connection to its history, and a commitment to the music and its fans. This makes the invitation especially significant for Underwood, who joined the ranks of legendary country artists like Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, and Garth Brooks.

Since her Opry induction, Underwood has continued to soar in her career. After the surprise invitation, her solo version of I Told You So was re-recorded with Travis, and the collaboration became a massive success, selling over one million copies and earning a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals.

As she celebrates her 10th anniversary with the Opry this month, it’s clear that Underwood’s induction was a defining moment in her career. One of country music’s most respected and successful stars, she has truly made her mark in the industry.
