After my twenty-year marriage ended, I tried to find love at forty-one. Desperate, I joined a dating service and met Juan, a charming man. I risked going to Mexico to surprise him, but it was disastrous.

Lily is 41. After 20 years of marriage, my spouse left me, and I had no idea what to do. I married young, therefore I had little social experience.

I had trouble making friends and finding love in my 40s. I isolated myself and hardly left the house.

I joined a dating service in despair and started conversing with Juan, a lovely Mexican man. He was so confident and brave I couldn’t believe it. We soon went beyond internet flirting.

He invited me to Mexico fast as things progressed. First, I hesitated. Suppose he wasn’t who he seemed. Could I be setting myself up for more heartbreak?

However, the notion of living my lonely life prompted me to take a gamble. Finally, I surprised him by arriving unannounced.

In preparation for a couple weeks’ journey, I bought plane tickets and packed. I felt anxious. Although I wasn’t sure he’d be the same as online, I needed this. It felt like my final chance at happiness.

Getting on the plane made my heart race with excitement and worry. The flight seemed endless, and I only thought about Juan.

Would he be as charming in person? Is he delighted to see me? I reminded myself that this was a new beginning to calm my rushing thoughts.

I had trouble reaching Juan because he lived in a little town distance from the airport. Journey was long and tiring. I had to take a taxi to his town after arriving.

“Where!? Where!?” My speech was incomprehensible, so the taxi driver screamed at me. My frustration grew, so I quickly showed him the address on my phone.

“See? Please transport me to this town now. How much?”

“Good, good, let’s go!” he said, understanding.

I always struggled with travel. I had terrible luck and constantly found the worst methods to communicate. I had the strength to keep going because I thought everything would work out this time.

The small, unknown roads made the drive seem forever. From the metropolis to the countryside, I saw the surroundings alter.

Driven further, I got increasingly worried. I wondered if I was making a big mistake. I ignored those ideas, reminding myself that I was here to try happiness.

Finally, the taxi stopped outside a little apartment building. I paid the driver and left, nervous and excited. Juan was entering his flat as I neared the building.

“Juan! Surprise!” I shouted, dashing toward him. Was eager to see his reaction.

Seeing me startled him, and I believed he was upset. But then he smiled, calming me.

“Oh, you! Not expecting you! Why didn’t you text me about your visit?

I apologize, Juan, I thought you would be glad to see me. You look great in person!” I said, hoping to lighten the mood.

“Yeah! “You too… Lucy…” he paused.

“Lily…” Regretfully, I corrected him. He could not recall my name. I may have missed that initial red flag.

“Lily! Yes, I meant that. I’m sorry, American names might be confusing.”

He might be correct, I thought. I should be more positive. His handsomeness and accent made me want to listen more.

He invited me into his place to discuss. We laughed and told stories like old friends as the talk flowed.

In the evening, we opened wine. My nerves melted with each drink. Juan was polite and attentive, and I enjoyed his company more than expected.

“What made you come all this way?” Juan asked, curiously lighting up.

“I just needed a change,” I said. After my husband departed, I felt lost. Talking to you restored my hope.”

“I’m glad you came,” he remarked, smiling warmly. “Nice to meet you in person finally.”

The wine relaxed our tongues and deepened our bond as we talked late. I became exhausted and could barely see.

I said, “I think I need to get some sleep,” yawning.

“Of course, you must be tired from your trip,” Juan said, leading me to a spare room. Sleep peacefully, Lily.”

“Goodnight, Juan,” I whispered, smiling as I drifted off, feeling pleased and hopeful for the first time in a while.

The next morning brought a hard truth I wasn’t expecting. I woke up puzzled on the street. Early morning sun poured a gentle light over the unknown surroundings.

As my head throbbed, I realized my phone and money were gone. Finding myself in my soiled clothes, I felt helpless.

I panicked looking around. Although others were starting their day, no one noticed me. My voice was unsteady and urgent as I spoke to pedestrians.

“Please assist! Anybody!? Call police!” Hopefully, someone would understand my shout.

Nobody did. They gazed at me quickly before leaving, treating me like a homeless person.

Language barriers kept me from getting aid. Hopelessness overcame me, and tears fell.

A towering man approached me when I thought things couldn’t get worse. He looked polite and wore an apron, suggesting he worked at a neighboring restaurant. He spoke Spanish quickly and was hard to understand. I shook my head to indicate confusion.

He acknowledged the issue and spoke terrible English. “You… need help?” he questioned softly.

“Yes, please,” I said, shaking. I have no money or phone. No idea what to do.”

Nodding, he was empathetic. Come… with me,” he said, gesturing for me to follow. “I… Miguel.”

“Lily,” I responded, straining to grin. Miguel took me to a cozy bistro down the block. The smell of fresh bread and coffee somewhat calmed me.

Miguel gave me a plain outfit and shoes in a back room. “You… change,” he continued, pointing to a small bathroom.

    I nodded thanks. “Thanks, Miguel.”

I changed into clean clothing in the restroom, feeling more normal. I looked in the mirror after splashing water on my face. Despite the situation, I had hope. Miguel’s kindness saved me.

Miguel had dinner waiting for me when I came out. Eggs, toast, and steaming coffee. Sit and eat, he said, pointing to the chair. He said, “Eat… you need strength.”

My stomach filled with food as I sat down to eat. “Thank you,” I repeated, tears in my eyes.

Miguel nodded and smiled. “You… use phone after.”

After eating, I thought about what got me here. After appearing perfect, Juan was shown to be a fraud.

The realization was devastating, but Miguel’s unexpected kindness showed me that good people still existed.

Juan appeared in the hall as I watched Miguel work, shocking me. He laughed and chatted with a new woman as if nothing had happened.

My heart raced and rage flared. How could he move on so quickly after hurting me?

I ran back to Miguel to explain. Juan, Miguel, that dude! He stole from me! We must call police!” My words tumbled out in a desperate hurry.

Miguel looked bewildered, not understanding my English. I inhaled and spoke carefully, gesturing to Juan.

“He stole my phone and money.”

Miguel nodded and looked worried, but his face suggested he didn’t understand. I understood I needed clarity.

I hurriedly sketched a phone and dollar sign on a napkin and crossed them out. “Juan took these from me,” I responded, pointing to the drawing and Juan.

Miguel nodded and looked worried, but his face suggested he didn’t understand. I understood I needed clarity.

I hurriedly sketched a phone and dollar sign on a napkin and crossed them out. “Juan took these from me,” I responded, pointing to the drawing and Juan.

Miguel’s realization opened his eyes. He stared at Juan, then me. He imitated holding a phone and inquired, “Police?”

“Yes, but wait,” I responded, thinking. “Can I borrow a waitress uniform?”

Miguel nodded, perplexed. He instantly brought a uniform to me. Fearful and determined, I ran to the bathroom to change.

After dressing, I inhaled and adjusted the uniform. I needed that phone back.

I went out into the hall to blend in with the crew. I focused on Juan and his new partner. They were talking, unaware of me. I shook as I neared their table.

I said, “Excuse me, sir,” in my most professional voice. “You dropped this earlier.” I handed Juan a napkin to prevent him from recognizing me.

Mildly astonished, Juan looked up. I swiftly grabbed his phone from the table as he took the napkin. I grabbed it and ran to Miguel, my heart racing.

Miguel looked bewildered as I handed him the phone. “Look at the messages,” I started Juan and me talking.

“There are dozens of other women.”

Miguel gaped as he scanned through the messages. He looked at me, then at Juan, who was laughing with the woman.

Miguel’s rage and understanding stiffened his face. Nodding, he called the cops on his phone.

Minutes later, police arrived. Miguel gestured to Juan as they spoke. The officers questioned Juan at his table as I watched. Juan’s face transformed from calm to perplexed to scared in seconds. The police took him out of the restaurant, and I felt relieved.

Miguel looked at me with compassion and affection. He asked, “You… okay?”

Relief and thankfulness filled my eyes as I nodded. “Thanks, Miguel. You helped and believed me. How can I repay you?

Miguel grinned sweetly. A good person helps another. Your new beginning.”

This wild adventure led me to someone who cared. Miguel’s warmth and support helped me overcome adversity and grow. Standing there gave me hope for the future. I wasn’t alone anymore, which changed everything.
