Life has been hard for Michael J. Fox lately.
The beloved performer has fought Parkinson’s disease for decades, which doesn’t get easier.
Michael’s youth was difficult, and he struggled to succeed in Hollywood.
Despite his Parkinson’s Disease, Michael J. Fox’s life has been successful.
Michael had a unique background.
Born in Edmonton, Canada, on June 9, 1961, his father worked in the Canadian Armed Forces, therefore the family traveled often.
Michael grew raised in a blue-collar environment, although his mother was a payroll clerk and had a solid job. Finally, the family moved to Burnaby, British Columbia, where Michael J. Fox discovered his acting interest in junior high.
His acting talent was evident when he entered the Drama division at school. Fox was cast in Leo & Me after his acting teacher recommended him, according to his website.
He had various TV roles and worked in the Vancouver theater. Michael J. Fox had decided to become an actor. He left for Los Angeles at 17 to become an actor.
“I knew that if I wanted to be someone, I couldn’t just sit on my parents’ porch and think, ‘Boy, if I was only born in the States and my parents had money and weren’t living paycheck to paycheck, I could do something with my life,’” he
Fox dropped out of high school, but his parents always supported his goals. Even his father drove him to LA. Fox told LIVE with Kelly and Mark that he doesn’t know how he persuaded his father.

“I told him I wanted to go to Los Angeles, the US, and be an actor. Yes, my father thought I was a hippie. He looked me in the eyes and said, ‘If you want to be a lumberjack, you might as well go to the forest.’ Michael J. Fox remembered him driving me to California.
Tinseltown success was harder to achieve. Michael started from a working-class home with little money.
“I lived on the fringes. In 2023, he told Variety, “I was 18 and dumpster diving for food.”
Fox finally became an actor and landed one of his most famous roles after a few years. He played Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, a hit TV sitcom.

Not long later, he earned more parts, including his renowned performance as Marty McFly in Back to the Future.
In 2022, he stated his mother never supported him taking on the role in Back to the Future. And it appears like she had good reason not to endorse it either.
He was working on Family Ties during the day when he received the role. When he told his mother about the movie role, she recommended against it. At 23, the actor contacted her in Canada and said, ‘They want me to do this Steven Spielberg movie, but I have to do it at night and I have to do Family Ties in the daytime.’ She answered, ‘You’ll be too tired.’”
His mother may have been right, he added, “I live for this kind of tired. It’ll be okay,” he told his mom. “Until two weeks ago, my mother felt Back to the Future was a poor idea. She adored the movie, but she was right—I was tired.”
He met Tracy Pollan on Family Ties. The show portrayed them as lovers. Sparks only appeared on-screen, but they would rejoin and fall in love years later.

While filming Family Ties, Michael J. Fox had a thing on Tracy.
My crush on her was immediate. The day she departed the concert, we were in the parking lot getting into our cars. She got into a rental Volkswagen, and I got into my Ferrari. She called me over to play a song. That’s Why I’m Here, a James Taylor song about John Belushi, was played. Someone said, “John’s gone, found dead, died high.” Later, brown bread soaked in his bed. It hits us like a ton of lead after the laughing and dread. Fox told NPR, “That’s why we’re here.”
Tracy Pollan married Michael J. Fox in 1988. They have Sam Michael Fox (1989), twins Schuyler Frances and Aquinnah Kathleen (1995), and Esmé Annabelle (2001).
Did you know Michael Fox didn’t start with a “J”? In Hollywood, he tried to join the Screen Actors Guild (SAG), the global film and TV organization. He found another member named “Michael Fox” upon applying. Fox chose “J” as a middle initial to honor his favorite actor, Michael J. Pollard.

At 60, Michael J. Fox resigned from acting in 2020 after playing Louis Canning in CBS’s courtroom drama “The Good Fight,” a spin-off of “The Good Wife”.
“I couldn’t rely on my ability to speak on any given day, which made me uncomfortable. He retired last year, telling Good Morning America.
Fox apparently began drinking frequently after his Parkinson’s diagnosis. He stopped, got therapy, and bravely disclosed his situation in 1998. He has been a spokesperson and inspiration for others with the disease since then.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation has raised over $750 million to treat Parkinson’s since 2000.
