Shelley Duvall, known for her role in Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” faced mental health struggles after the emotionally demanding performance. In a 2016 appearance on Dr. Phil, Duvall exhibited signs of distress, expressing beliefs that her co-star Robin Williams was not dead but “shape-shifting” and feeling threatened by imaginary figures like “the sheriff of Nottingham.”

“The Shining,” released in 1980, placed significant strain on Duvall, who portrayed Wendy alongside Jack Nicholson’s character, Jack Torrance. Duvall’s distinctive appearance and acting prowess made her a legend in the 1980s, but she gradually retreated from the spotlight after a hiatus from Hollywood.

Duvall’s acting career began unexpectedly when she caught the attention of Robert Altman’s associates at a party. Despite lacking acting experience, she impressed Altman and earned acclaim for her performance in “Brewster McCloud” and later in “3 Women.”

Her notable roles in films like Woody Allen’s “Annie Hall,” Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining,” and Terry Gilliam’s “Time Bandits” showcased her versatility as an actor. Additionally, Duvall created and hosted the fantasy series “The Faerie Tale Theater” and “Tall Tales and Legends,” receiving an Emmy nomination for her work.

“The Shining,” based on Stephen King’s novel, revolves around the Torrance family’s chilling experiences while caretaking a secluded hotel inhabited by malevolent spirits. Duvall’s portrayal of Wendy mirrored her personal struggles, especially following her breakup with singer-songwriter Paul Simon and the demanding filming conditions set by Kubrick.

Kubrick’s meticulous directing style, including numerous retakes of scenes, took a toll on Duvall’s mental and physical well-being. Nicholson acknowledged Kubrick’s challenging approach, and Duvall herself revealed the emotional strain of continuously portraying Wendy’s distress.

Despite the difficulties, Duvall remained grateful for the opportunity to work with Kubrick and achieve fame. However, her mental health deteriorated over time, culminating in her distressing appearance on Dr. Phil and subsequent treatment, which sparked controversy over the ethics of her televised interview.

Vivian Kubrick criticized Dr. Phil’s handling of the situation as exploitative and urged others to boycott the show. Despite the challenges, Duvall made a return to acting with a role in the 2023 horror film “The Forest Hills.”

As fans reflect on Duvall’s iconic performances, they also express hope for her recovery and well-being. The enduring impact of “The Shining” serves as a reminder of the dedication and strength of actors like Duvall, whose commitment to their craft often comes at a personal cost.
