NCIS’ Brian Dietzen explains the subtle change that made all the difference in the show’s tribute to David McCallum

The recent episode of NCIS served as a poignant tribute to the beloved character Dr. Mallard, portrayed by longtime cast member David McCallum, who passed away in September 2023. While the death of Dr. Mallard was expected, given McCallum’s real-life passing, there was one surprising detail that caught viewers off guard, aside from the unexpected cameo at the episode’s conclusion.

The episode commenced with Dr. Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, who also co-wrote the episode, visiting Dr. Mallard at his home with coffee in hand. However, upon his arrival, Palmer makes the heartbreaking discovery that Ducky has passed away peacefully in his sleep.

Instead of abruptly transitioning to the typical NCIS opening sequence, the show opted for a more gradual fade-in accompanied by a slower rendition of the familiar theme song that has accompanied the series for over two decades.

This decision to alter the pace of the opening sequence was a deliberate one, albeit a challenging one to execute effectively. Brian Dietzen, in discussing the creative choice, acknowledged the difficulty in transitioning from such a somber moment to the usual energetic opening credits, typically filled with action-packed scenes.

“We were struggling with that, I’ll be real honest, because coming out of that cold open, it didn’t really feel very fitting to [have] all of a sudden our wonderful opening credits that our people do, our post-production people do an amazing, amazing job on,” Dietzen explained to TV Insider. “It usually sets the table and gets people’s energy up for, this is what we’re about to do, and there’s explosions, and there’s fighting, there’s gunshots and stuff. It felt like tonally it wasn’t right for this episode.”

The decision to slow down the introduction served as a poignant and respectful way to commence such an emotional episode, paying homage to both David McCallum and his iconic character, Ducky. The tribute was executed with care and precision, resonating deeply with viewers.
