Folk singer Melanie, renowned for her performance at Woodstock in 1969, has passed away at the age of 76. The news was confirmed by her PR agency, Glass Onyon PR. Melanie Safka, commonly known as Melanie, was active in the music scene until earlier this month, working on her latest project, “Second Hand Smoke,” which would have been her 32nd album.

Melanie is best known for her hit songs, including “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” and “Brand New Key,” the latter reaching number 1 on the charts in 1971. Her first big musical hit, “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” was a collaboration with the Edwin Hawkins Singers and climbed to number 6 on the Hot 100 chart in 1970. Despite her success, Melanie was not as widely recognized as some of her contemporaries, like Joni Mitchell.

Her family, including three children Leilah, Jeordie, and Beau Jarred, confirmed her passing on Facebook, expressing gratitude for the affection from fans. Melanie’s impact on the music world extended beyond her era, as evident when Miley Cyrus covered her song “Look What They’ve Done To My Song, Ma.”

Melanie’s performance at Woodstock in 1969 became iconic, and she later shared her experience, recalling an out-of-body moment during the festival. Despite not achieving the same recognition as some peers, Melanie’s contribution to music, including her unique hits, left a lasting impact on those who appreciated her talent.
